I have quite curly thick and messy hair which forces me to keep it fairly short . I know it's possible to straighten hair with straightening irons and so forth but I heard that really damages your hair over the long run .

Anyone here who straightens their hair ? If so what are your experiences with it .

I straightened it some days when it was long which as you say didn't do too well in the long run. I have shorter hair now and straighten my bangs alot. it causes it to feel a little less soft but especially since I get it cut often, it's totally worth it.

It really depends on your hair, what your going for, and how high you turn the temp. on the straightener. If you take more time with it on a lower heat, it won't be as damaging.

If you really enjoy having silky hair, I wouldn't do it. However, if you could care less if it's a little straw-like, go for it, it usually turns out great.

I just ordered a straightning Iron online from Sedu . It's expensive but reviews say it's the best and less damaging . I want to finally grow my hair down to my chin roughly .

I have naturally pin straight hair so ive never had to deal with straighteners but most of my friends straighten their hair everyday...and your correct it does damage it...tech when you straighten it your melting the hair into a new form with cause breakage and also can cause your hair to fall out eventually...i reccomend using anti breakage shampoo and conditioner if your going to straighten it each day....one of my best friends actually had longer hair than i do (i guess you could call my hair a scene style....longer in front shorter in back... but w/e you would like to call it is fine with me)he straightened it everyday and it got so damaged that he had to buzz his hair...so my rec is that you just take care of it with anti damaged products...
hope this helped or made you rethink the straightener...

I personally have never touched a straightener to my hair, but I have a very close dude friend who does.

Hair damage depends on a lot of things. How often you use heat on your hair, your hair length, what shampoo/conditioner you use, and your hair in general. My friend has straightened his hair everyday for the past year (at least) and it looks fine, not much (if any) damage. If you do straighten your hair a lot you should probably which over to a high moisturizing shampoo and/or conditioner, just to help keep it healthier. Also, if you don't want to straighten it everyday, try washing it at night and putting on a skull cap (you know, this winter hats that cling to your head) and leave it on as you sleep. My friend's cousin does that and his hair straightens out fine.

I think it's really an idividual thing. Different things work for different people.

There are many different types of treatments, or products for different types of hair. Using a flat iron to your hair is really bad without any product. You can find any sort of product in a hair salon, or even in a CVS/drugstore. Read the description of some products to see which one is best for your hair.

If you don't use products, blow dry your hair with a round brush. If you do it right, it will come out as straight as an iron, but keeping your hair a little healthier.
You do what you love, and fuck the rest.

Haha my hairs like yours, if not worse. I do straighten my hair, from time to time. I just takes a load of time cuz my hairs uber long. But anyways, The best striaghtener to go with is a ceramic one because they will do the least amount of damage to your hair. Still damage, but not nearly as much as a flat iron. The best brand is the Chi. If you wanna just straighten it once and get it over with, you can go to the salon and they'll do the Chi straightening and it'll be straight for six months, and then you have to go back and get it redone. But its up to you.

i have really thick and curly hair, and for the most part, i keep it pulled up.

but when i want to wear it down, i straighten it. i straighten it first at night, then a little more in the morning so i dont have to get up at the ass crack of dawn to do it.

yep.

I have short, thick and wavy hair so I have to straighten it the whole time, which is annoying. But I think I'm going to cut it really short or let it grow out (or both - letting it grow before cutting it all off, obviously) so that I don't kill it. My sister said I should cut it really short and spiky and dye it green, but I would have to wait until next summer to do that so the green would grow out or wash out or something before school, because I cannot go to school with green hair. I might not dye it green though. It's isn't dyed in my picture, one of my friends edited the picture. That was what gave me the idea to dye it green.. Emoticon: Grin :D Sorry, I talk too much..

i straighten my hair all the time and it is fine.

Mind, i have the best hair in the world and i take really good care of it.. except that i straighten it all the time..

My advice would be careful not to do a rush job, even if you're in a hurry. Because burns + ears = BAD.

I second Megan
I always straighten my hair and it's fine, although as someone said, lowering the temp. and taking a bit longer causes less damage.
Also, you can get chemical straightening (your hair is strightened for a period of a year more or less) but those cause a lot of damage so I wouldn't recommend it.

On some people's, like my sister's and friend's hair, you can keep straightening it over and over. I do mine occasionally, and it's alright. Also, you can get this spray stuff which you put on first, which prevents it from getting split ends, etc..

I used to straighten my hair but I've grown to love my curls and straightened hair just looks really bad to me now, its just so obvious and its almost like the hair has suffocated or something the way its so shiny but brittle.

CONDITIONER!!!

Seriously. Even if you don't wash your hair everyday when you straighten it you should still condiiton it every day.
I love who I am now. I just wish that everyone else did too.

i have really curly hair as well, and it grows up! so i'll echo what everyone else has already said conditioner! also they make heat protectent sprays you can use, make sure your straightener has ceramic plates, real ceramic plates! although from the one you've said your getting, that's a good brand should work well. Also learn to love your curls, that's important too, maybe you won't feel the necessity to straighten it all the time. I'm not sure exactly what kind of long term damage it can do to your hair though, guess i'll find out myself later in life!

I have naturally very curly hair, but I think it feels better when it's at least for the most part straight.

A good way to straightem your hair is to use a blow dryer and a brush... if you know how, you can usually straighten your hair against the brush, and you won't have to use a straightener.

EDIT:
I also used to use conditioner, but I found I didn't like how it made my hair feel and scalp feel heavier-ish. It's hard to explain...
But it all depends on what kind of hair you have, so I suggest trying different things, and seeing for yourself what works best.

I used to straighten my hair daily.. to the point of creating damage.. I mean.. my hair became soo brittle.. now I often don't bother, and if I want to make them straight, I use a blow dryer, doing same thing Robin described.

I was wondering, since we're on the topic, has anyone ever used those chemical straightening kits? Or had it done professionaly? What does that do to your hair: amount of damage vs. benefit?
