Just a quick question, how many posts do you need for each of the ranks on QA (the QA1, QA2 ones that is).
I've been wondering for a while but haven't found an answer.

We quite deliberately do not publish a list, 'cos we don't want members to feel they have to post and post and post randomly just so they can get some "promotion."
Believe me, a (hypothetical) QA3 member whose posts are thoughtful and always useful, intelligent and to the point is far more valued than a (hypothetical) QA8 who's got up there by making post after post in game topics, random replies that don't make sense, and generally is posting just to increase their count and perceived popularity (and they're easy to spot).
However, if you really want to know, it's not that hard to get a general impression by looking at the post counts of people who have already achieved the rank above yours. Just as a titbit though, the highest rank, QA10 (community god), carries a 1500 post bracket.

Ok, thanks for that, I don't think I'll ever make it to QA10 though.

As said. It's not really important you do so. You could make one seminal post thats truly amazing and be more valued than someone who makes a 1000 posts about absolutely jack all.

Quality over quantity indeed
"Ok, thanks for that, I don't think I'll ever make it to QA10 though."
Just give it some time I'm been a reasonably active member on a different site for 3 years or so, and I'm just about to hit the 5000 post mark Can't expect to reach the top rank within a few weeks, can you? ^^

The number of posts required to reach the next level is on an exponential curve. It takes longer with each consecutive level

hey! i do game forums, but it's not because i don't contribute. i do actually. a lot. i say a lot of things that make people angry to, but i don't care. they're my opinion and i'm allowed to it. butthe game forums are for when FaceBook gets boring and there's nothing else to do. so.... yeah. my short rant's done.

I also agree with the quality over quantity ideal. Whenever I respond to anything, I make sure I don't just post one or two sentences. I put thought into it I've seen some rank 7 or 8's who just post "welcome to qa!" on a lot of introductions. Meanwhile, I individualize almost every single one to make that person feel more unique I don't expect to be a level 10, and I feel accomplished because I've only been on here for a little while and I'm rank 2 Well, that's about it. Bye!

I'm starting to realize you cant really take people's ranks as indication for their authority. Newbies shouldnt just assume that someone with a really high ranking knows what they're talking about when giving advice. I've seen a few people who joined many months after myself and who ranked up MUCH MUCH FASTER than me but NEVER REALLY HAVE ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL TO SAY WHEN THEY OPEN THEIR MOUTHS !! So I definitely agree with the people who said quality over quantity. That should pretty much ring true for most things in life in general...amount of friends, sexual experiences, time spent with loved ones, etc.

Just an idea - to sort out the whole quality over quantity thing could you give mods the ability to promote people. Not like a whole rank at a time but maybe add a few points (maybe treat a really awesome post as if it's more than one?).
It's just an idea but it might make the ranking system work better.

Sarah, Erin, I heartily agree! People should never ever assume that the advice and contribution of a QA10 has any more weight, authority or substance than a QA1. Especially (as we've seen so often, especially recently) it is so easy to get there without contributing quality content or friendly support.
Matt in theory your idea is great, but I don't think it would be fair of the team and I to decide on a case-by-case basis what "rank" to give individuals ... it would end up being inconsistent.
I think we've said this elsewhere at various times, but this is another "just wait for QA5" situation - in QA5, "ranks" won't be based merely on post counts. We'll have a consistent system that awards higher points and higher ranks to people who contribute the quality content we want on QA, and will give little or no points to thin contributions. Hopefully speeding to QA10 on game threads and one-line replies will be a thing of the past.
