Has anyone seen the animated childrens' movie Shark Tale? Lenny: If you haven't noticed, I'm different from other sharks. Let's just put it that way; leave it at that.
Oscar: Define "different".
Lenny: XXXXXXXXXXX. You're the first fish I ever told. I'm tired of keeping it a secret. And my dad, he'll never accept me for who I am. What's wrong with me? Now, in the movie he's only a vegetarian, but I think you can see the metaphor going on here. The shark has a soft voice (especially compared to the rest of them), is slightly effeminate, and goes on to dress up as a dolphin in baby blue with a (cute) handkerchief around his neck.
And apparently I'm not the only one to notice.
"Nonetheless, this tale of self-discovery has a happy ending. Main character Oscar is forced to teach father Don Lino a lesson about unconditional love, 'So your son likes kelp; so he has a fish as a best friend; so your son likes to dress like a dolphin.' Of which Don Lino replied, 'I love you son. No matter what you eat or how you dress'."
Anyone else notice things like this in movies? I thought it was an awesome lesson to teach kids
"I am reminded of a colleague who reiterated 'all my homosexual patients are quite sick'—to which I finally replied 'so are all my heterosexual patients'." -Ernest van den Haag, psychotherapist

I did notice that! I thought it was a really clever parallel, and I do love the lesson it tried to teach.

it will be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end yet.

I noticed that and thought it was good however, I think that a lot of these, be yourself videos are seen as 'gay' when in reality they're just 'be yourself'
In this situation, however, I would agree with it being slightly gay themed.
I'm a Loiner, apparently...

Being "who you are" and dealing with acceptance are pretty universal themes in culture. If anything, I would say that the Shark Tale subplot and the struggle of gay people relate independently to that archetype rather than necessarily having anything to do with each other.

I noticed it too, but then again, I notice metaphors where there aren't any so I thought it was just me. Glad to see I'm not the only one. Hopefully someday we can get an actual gay kids movie out, but until then, movies like this that teach the general message of accepting people for who they are are the next best thing.
