This is more a curiosity post than me telling you all I know.

Are there transgender people competing in the Olypmics? And if they are, are they allowed to be in their preferred gender races? For example if a woman who transitioned from a man was to run, would they be able to run in the womens or would they have to run in the mens?

This came from a discussion with my sister because she said that a man now a woman may have an advantage if they were running in the woman's race which wouldn't be fair. I do get where she's coming from, but then not at the same time.

Does anyone know anything about any of this?

I am always so worried i'll offend someone because I don't know much about the aspects of transgender, so take me as a total newbie and I apologise in advance if I have said something wrong.
You know i'd rather walk alone, than play a supporting role.

The closest thing I've heard is of wwomen being mistaken for men and having to have their gender tested. Earlier today they announced on the news that the Olympic committee decided that any woman with a higher than average level of testosterone will not be allowed to compete in the future.

Hope that's not true, Marshall. Gender discrimination in unchallenged action, if so.

Actually, if they have a higher then normal level of testosterone they may just be required to take estrogen boosting hormones to make it "fair"

So in theory any trans person could be able to compete if they are on HRT.

But they've also taken medals away from women in the past because it turned out they were some version of intersexed.

It's an interesting thing to look at. I'm pretty sure that MTF trans athletes are not usually allowed to compete with other women due to an 'unfair advantage'.

It's allowed, but you're required to be on hormones, so there is no competitive advantage. Oddly enough, if you really think about it, since with what you mentioned, since some women in the olympics probably (with how common it sadly has become) are on steroids, the trans woman would have less of a competitive advantage lol.

Transgendered individuals are being given more opportunity, an M to F recently competed for Miss America.
However, being trans would most likely provide advantages if they were to compete with their gender group (sex and gender are not the same thing).
If a M to F were to compete with women then they would most likely be at an advantage; they would be able to lift more and run faster and hit harder.
The same goes for F to M. Testosterone effects strength.
Most likely, trans people would not be allowed to compete. If the competition was to be fare trans people would have their own teams to compete against each other. F to M vs. F to M, you know?

So then we'd have the Olympics, the Winter Olympics, the Paralympics, and the Trans*lympics

@ Marshall- there's also the special olympics and the gay games (formerly gay olympics).

Whilst the LGBT acronym is used in information I've found about the gay games, I haven't found a great deal of stuff on the inclusion of trans* athletes.
