Topic: What do you think of current music?

The title describes most of my question for you guys, so I won't go too much into detail.
But basically, I'm wondering what you guys think of the direction that the music industry is going these days.
My own opinion is slightly mixed, because while (in my opinion) roughly 98% of music sounds like it was made by a bunch of monkeys that were handed electric keyboards, there's a small portion of bands that still produce real, good-sounding music. Take Of Monsters and Men, for example. They've only been a band for around three years, but their music has real instruments and vocal talent, and is some of the best music I've heard, ever.
(And for any of you guys that do like current music, don't take offense to this as this is merely my own opinion.)
But anyway. I just kinda want to hear what you guys think on this whole subject.

Meh. My collective term for the bringers of terrible pop is "Disney Star". Does anyone remember Hillary Duff? Hannah Montana (aka Miley Cyrus)? Hell, even Justin Bieber fits into the group. In 10 years, all of these pop stars will be footnotes, and new, identical ones will have replaced them.
But I don't dislike modern music as a whole, nor do I single out any one genre to dislike. I usually only really like a handful of songs from a single artist, so my tastes are quite varied.

I agree. I dislike most modern music. When I tell people that, they seem to think it's because I'm some kinda hipster. I don't like a lot of old music either, (Disco, Muzak, Techno, etc.). But the thing is, there's 70 years worth of "old" (non-classical orchestra type stuff) and only a few years worth of "new" stuff. I don't like dubstep or most rap, but I love Mumford and Sons. There's just more old stuff to choose from. I'm sure eventually music will pick up again.

Well when 2009 rolled around, I could tolerate it. It was still more synth than I wanted, but there was an element of talent.
Even synths have a field where the producer is just unbelievable talented. Listen to Gaga's "Judas" song without her voice. These were damn good production works on their own. It does take a good ear, and some creativity to make some nice layered smut like that.
Butch Vig (one of my fav producers; Nirvana & Garbage. Nuff said) is a good example of where synth and instrument can come together with beautiful harmony. I don't mind the lacking of real instruments, but the effort to blend authentic with synthetic matters.
After 2010... *shakeshead* I'll say it was far few inbetween.
To each there own first off. But there is no denying, the amount of effort put into the music itself, the production process, is lacking.Yeah, the artist plays some (small ass) part (in most pop today), but the production to me is what gives the cake it's flavor. And most times, the producer is the one coming up with how they sing the song as well.
I say, modern music has gotten childish. It's like we've reverted back to infantry, and only like; colorful visual stimulation, smiling womens faces, and steady repetitive beats. That's what babies like.

Dubstep... Alien messages created by smacking cats on brick walls by their tails whilst pulsating with electricity.
This is why I'm glad Kylie came from the eighties, it means she's clutched onto the realness yet still advanced! Unlike all the newcomers that... Well yeah, like Rihanna, have huge gaps in songs where they just have bass playing and rely on their sex appeal.

I listen to Indie or Alternative for the most part so I can't really say much. I like what I listen to and the stuff on the radio is tolerable but I don't like it enough to buy it all off iTunes or anything.

To be honest, I don't think much of it at all. I tend to operate in a more sideways/backwards fashion when it comes to music rather than listen to the radio or watch one of the two music channels my TV actually picks up. I can't stand 'pop' music at the best of times, and the stuff that's being released now is nothing short of terrible.
Then again, I can't really comment all that much considering I go elsewhere for music and don't have to put up with what I perceive as bad.

It really does depend, some music genres, songs and artists have just lost all sense of meaning. But some still have that sense of magic to them. Some artists have such beautiful voices, song writing and composing skills and lyrics in their songs and produce some amazing songs. There many ballads, party songs, love songs that just move me, but a lot of the shit that is produced is just horrible.
I used to believe in having respect for everyone's music and NEVER bully anyone for their music choice, but some of the genres/types of music produces now really make me question that belief
Interviewer: According to you, the girls run the world - but what do you think about the girls and the gays teaming up and running the world together?
Beyoncé: Well, that's what I meant when I said girls. (Laughs)

I'm not fond of current music. At least the really mainstream stuff. There are still some really good bands you won't hear often on the radio.

I kinda like today's music... well... SOME of it. I like Lady Gaga, Britney, Katy Perry, that kind of stuff, but today's rap SUCKS, there are very few rappers that I actually like; Tyga is okay, I like Nicki Minaj (if you even consider her a rapper lol), but mainly I like this person on Youtube, her name is Lega C and she is AWESOME, she definitely deserves more recognition than she gets.
So bluntly, about half of today's music SUCKS, the other half I'm either loving or fangirling over.
You laugh at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same.

I hate the music that is being produced now such as one direction, Nicki Minaj, JlS, Justin Bieber, Rita Ora, etc.
But there is some current music out there that is good.

It depends. There are bands like Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club which i like, and i love Angus and Julia Stone, but they're not mainstream music.
Music like Drake, Nicki Minaj etc are awful. I don't listen to the radio or music channels anymore. The past few months i've been on 8tracks which is where people upload their own mixes, so i just listen to the ones with similar tastes and i discover new and less well known bands and also some old bands i've never known about or didn't give a chance.

One word for it? Mainstream. It's not awesome. The songs are catchy, but mainstream! You're not in awe when you hear them! You just tap your feet to the rhythm or something! The lyrics are stupid, insulting or nonsense most of the time. Few are actually good...but in only one aspect. For example: a song can have awesome rhythm, but shitty lyrics! And vice versa -.-
Awesome music exists, but rarely on the popular radio stations.
GAY MARRIAGE
or as I like to call it MARRIAGE
Cuz I ate lunch today, not GAY LUNCH
And I watched television, I didn't GAY WATCH IT.
So marriage? It's a human right, not an heterosexual priviledge.

Mainstream music has always been awful. Don't judge a decade by what sells the most.
Go back to the 60's and 70's. The big hits at the time are completely forgotten by now; times has let us sift through and find the "best" music (in quotes because it's so subjective and because I don't care for most of that kind of music anyway).
IMO, computers have enabled all kinds of brilliant musical innovations. A single person at a computer can create something that would have taken an orchestra a few decades ago. Check out the works of artists like BT, Kashiwa Daisuke and World's End Girlfriend.
The Internet allows us to find an incredible array of underground music that would have been impossible to find in the past in seconds. I can get traditional Indonesian music, Finnish psychedelic drone folk, Japanese breakcore and music made on the computer of a talented New Hampshire teenager without leaving my seat.
If you think today's music is garbage, you haven't looked hard enough. Whether you like classical, rock and roll, pop, black metal, industrial, drone, trance, whatever, I guarantee you can find something you like that was made in the last few years.

It's getting worse in regards to dubstep (brostep -__-) and hip-hop although there's still some good stuff out there. Drum and bass has been better but it's still doing pretty good imo.

I think there's good modern music out, but you've gotta look hard. I personally love Fun. and Neon Trees, but Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry...yikes! Older music is better overall. The Beatles, Queen, Aerosmith, Journey, etc. are the real deal
