Read last night that Portugal's decriminalization of drugs in eleven years has decreased drug use.

Here's the link: http://www.businessinsider.com...on-works-2012-7

I used to be skeptical about legalizing all drugs but now decriminalization seems far more sensible and could actually happen. Instead of sending frequent drug users to jail, we can get them the help they need thus removing mostly non-violent people in prisons and jails.

This makes alot of sense to me and I think we should strive for decriminalizing all drugs instead of just legalizing one drug for a few (2) reasons (I didn't do my homework so please correct any mistakes I've made in the comments section):

- It would effectively put drug smugglers out of work since more people will stop needing drugs because of the rehab time they'll get instead of jail time.

- Seemingly innocent people will get the help they need instead of going to jail.

That's all I can think of right now because I'm getting a headache.

It could never work. The market will be there no matter what. If the U.S. legalizes them they'll tax the shit out of them, so dealers will A) lower prices because of large supply or B) try to control how they're "legally" imported

Tyler, I agree with your skepticism, but could you provide some reasoning behind your condemnation?

Tyler, legalization is different from decriminalization. Decriminalizing means that people using drugs won't be taken to jail. Instead they will receive the help they need for their drug addiction. It will still be illegal to sell drugs.

Ultimately, I think all drugs should be fully legalized, since:

1. Being illegal has never stopped people from taking drugs in the past. As it is, there is virtually no "quality control" in the drug market; you could buy something sold to you as cocaine that's actually sugar, or something sold to you as LSD that's just paper (this one has actually happened to me... Don't trust anyone who tells you the tabs are "double dipped!"). I hate when people make it sound like the main reason not to do drugs is because buying them supports "criminals" who may also partake in things like sex trafficking; if the drugs were legal, none of this would be an issue!

2. Using drugs does not mean you have a problem with drugs. While "you have a problem and need help" is a definite improvement over "you are a criminal and should be locked up," it's still kind of ridiculous. If the people in question are actually addicts, then by all means help them, but someone who smokes weed occasionally or takes a psychedelic trip every couple of months is not "sick." There are reckless users out there, such as people who drive drunk, and that should certainly be considered criminal behavior, but most drug users are neither dangerous nor addicted.

The best solution, in my opinion, is to make all drugs illegal and do a MUCH better job of educating people. I'm constantly shocked by how ignorant people in the US are where drugs are concerned, and the schools and the media only make things worse. I read an article online about a drug overdose in North Dakota, and the drugs was described as "25-I NBOMe, also called 2C-I." Those are two different substances; 25-I is many times more potent than 2C-I and if someone reading the articles believes what he reads about the drugs and takes them, he could be seriously hurt. That something like that can be published as serious news is shameful.
For now though, it would be a vast improvement to decriminalize all drugs in the USA, although I highly doubt it will happen for a while, if ever.
