When people aren't as cultured and open-minded, and say something upsetting-- how do you cope??

If they are ignorant-- I am sarcastic and attempt to insult them without them realizing it. If they are malicious-- I am harsh, my tongue can cut like a knife if I want it too.

for me, I kind of just let it roll off.

i understand that the world is full of closed-minded people, and a lot of them can't be changed.

I try and keep more open-minded people around me. It's better for my health =]

I smile at them Emoticon: Smile :) Believe me, it KILLS them inside >:] Well that, and it honestly doesn't bug me, like, at all, and once they see that I'm not even phased by them, they get annoyed and stop. Bigots only do stuff to get a reaction out of the person they're picking on, if they don't get what they're looking for, they move on.
You laugh at me because I'm different. I laugh at you because you're all the same.

I wink at them, and keep it moving. ;)

Or when I'm bored, I'll follow them, and channel chewbacca behind their back.

Me: -_-...*chewbacca noise*

Bigot: What the hell!? O_O *turns around*

Me: -_-... *quack*

But I most times, I maturely say the truth.

I agree with Avi as well. However, if they're being some serious Bigots then yknow, I let em' have it. I make sure they know what they're saying and why. But, there will always be bigots and they're hard to get through.

Assuming this is in strictly off-line sense... I split it two ways. If they don't purposely mean to cause offence, I try my best to explain why I'm offended/upset/etc and hopefully educate them a little.

If they mean to cause offence, then I forgo being polite and rip them to shreds. Most of the time I do not stop and think about the whys of what they say, I react instinctively and if it's an angry reaction, chances are it's only going to get worse. I have a short temper at the best of times, and none when it comes to anyone purposefully offensive.

Then again, online I actually give myself a little time to cool down and responded with some clarity and logic.

I don't well, depends if I am angry if so I lose my temper and that stops them or if I'm chilled then I just ignore them and leave.

I just ingnore them and keep being happy it's super annoying to people who try to upset you they can't stand it. Or if they're really mean and I'm in a knidof angry mood which doesn't seen to happen a lot but anyway I'll say something back but I'll never get properly angry at someone cause I Barbour to much anger in me to be able to let it out at small intervals it's all gonna come out at once and I wouldn't want to be that person it comes out on. Emoticon: Grin :D
To live is to do what makes you happy not others. If what you love is different then stand against the tide of "normality" never stop fighting for happiness.

The easiest way to deal with them is by making random noises or take advice from Sandi Thom's album and "smile, it confuses people."

Oh man...this one time someone called me a dyke and I deliberately misunderstood them - I said that I didn't see what resemblance I bore to a type of dam or levee common in the Netherlands (a dike). They just looked so confused...

Normally I just ignore them and walk off, sometimes I'll sarcastically say "when you're ready to stop being an asshole I'll talk to you"

Stephen is mowing the lawn, indefinitely [Avatar]
I have this "point" at which I break. Usually I can ignore and walk away with no issue whatsoever because I just think, 'do you know what, I'm not going to waste my time thinking about you and your stupid comments' but then other times when they say something which really hits home.

omg.

Bitch Stephen has arrived.

If they're saying things about me I just glare at them until they go away, and I'll just get upset about it later when in private (I'm revoltingly sensitive). If they say things about my girlfriend, however... just no. They'd better brace themselves for a verbal hell.
Most of the time it's the same guy, actually. My retort is always "I get more girls than your intolerant ass does." The satisfying thing is that it's true.
People tell me that I have this awful mental disease. Personally, I don't think it's fatal or even harmful; if anything I'm a little bit lovesick.

@People who say "it's just an opinion": Corrective Rape is also an opinion. Is raping someone okay, if opinions are valid?

^ Believing corrective rape is a valid solution to homosexuality is an opinion.

OT: I'm not going to get openly belligerent with bigoted people if there's no point. But I tend to be the type of person who reacts angrily to such things and I don't just stand there and take it. Seeing as how this has actually never happened, I can't say for sure how I'd react, but it probably wouldn't be too positively.

But there's a difference between "I respect your choice to be gay" (ignorant, but harmless) and "you're going to hell, you filthy faggot" (gonna get a bad reaction from me).

But I do NOT believe all opinions are valid because they're not. And they're not all equally deserving of respect and I won't respect someone's opinion just because it's an opinion.
