Topic: Why do gay men always love girly music?
Posts
 |
 |
Stereotype time.
You'd think that only the femme guys would be like this, but even the bodybuilder and "straight-acting" guys do too. It's like genetic or something. It may not necessarily be mainstream like Gaga, but almost guarenteed they'll prefer female singers, and if they're into the less mainstream stuff, they'll like some indie female singer-songwriter.
Why no appreciation in male musicians at all?
Then there's the like 5% who actually do like "masculine" music.
I'm kinda in the rest of the 95%. Been looking into the issue though and looking for suggestions for rock/metal bands or male rappers who have catchy songs. Feel free to suggest any.
With lesbians, I don't see any musical trends really, except they all love Tegan and Sara. xD

I'm into industrial and experimental music (stuff like Coil, essentially a gay couple, who made fascinating and terrifying and totally un-"gay" music), and my boyfriend likes electronica like Gorillaz and Caravan Palace.
True, many gay men I've encountered have been into "girly" music, but they are usually the more noticeably gay ones. I've had friends tell me nothing about my behavior betrays my homolust; there are probably loads of less obvious gay men (and "obvious" ones too- there's no reason a person can't be flamey and listen to black metal or gangsta rap) with as much diversity of music as you'll find in the straight world.
Also, I don't think music can be simplified into "masculine" and "feminine" music. What about instrumental music? Or music with vocalists of both sexes?
As for recommendations that are "catchy," for rock-ish music I recommend Neutral Milk Hotel, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Frog Eyes, and ZOX. I can't think of any good "catchy" metal (so with the caveat that it's totally NOT catchy, I'll suggest you listen to "Two Hunters" by Wolves In The Throne Room in the dark by yourself with a nice pair of headphones). I don't listen to a lot of rap, but I've enjoyed Deltron 3030 and Digable Planets (although they have prominent female vocals as well as male).

Good topic, even if it is a gross generalisation.
I think the real issue here is that 90% of western people listen exclusively to mainstream music. The only difference being that gay guys are more likely to "own up" to liking Lady Gaga and Rihanna even though the straight ones actually do too. I personally believe pop music has it's place, and that's in clubs and at parties, but I wouldn't actively LISTEN to pop music, because it's usually so basic you only need to hear it once or twice. Still, it's great to dance and sing along to, so it does serve it's purpose.
Anyway, I've always believed most people don't bother to develop their musical taste very much. They have it in them to appreciate a wider range of music, but they just don't have the patience to work at it. The hooks are often buried in alternative music and don't grab non-astute listeners enough for them to actually give most well-written material a go.
Take a look on my profile if you want to see what I listen to.
Senses dissolve into soliloquies; flooding ascent in synchronicity.

aAH There goes that word again. I hate the "straight acting" word there not acting straight they are just masculine in general and music has no gender. I think it is mainly society trying to tell people which sex should listen to which music.

@Artjene it definately is society brainwashing people. But I just didn't originally find metal or rap any fun or any good. I always thought females made better or more fun music. When I was 13, I only listened to female singers. Any rock bands I liked had female singers. Nothing wrong with that, but it just felt lop-sided and weird. I wanted to look into this gay stereotype and find a reason that so many gay men seemed to go for Britney, and that gay clubs play this stuff.
So I try to find male stuff I like... it's hard, but I'm working on it.

^yeah another thing I notice is... maybe gay men are just more open to music? Because although they'll admit their love for girly music, these same guys will also like rock (like classic rock), hip-hop, a lot of things that aren't necessarily girly. They won't only listen to girly music, but it seems a lot of their music is.
I mean, straight guys are only portrayed as listening to any kind of rock or rap or country. Some of them want to "protect their heterosexuality and masculinity" and can't listen to girly stuff publicly.
Personally, I love older music, mainly because of my dad constantly listening to it. Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Eagles, Heart, Bee Gees among others... a lot of my friends tell me to stop looking in my dad's record collection. -.-

My whole playlist is composed of Folky Male musicians such as John Mayer, Mat Kearney, Mumford and Sons, City and Colour. There are a lot of gay guys (mainly masculine) out there that listen to more "masculine music". I suppose it's just a matter of location and how many gay men you have been exposed to.

I'm listening to The Smiths right now, just saying (but anyone can like The Smiths). But I do love some "feminine" artists and bands like She & Him, Fiona Apple, and Alanis Morissette. I like songs I can relate to and are catchy. As homosexual males I think we are secure with our masculine side and our feminine side. So we have no problem listening to "feminine music". But then again, I hate gender stereotypes.

My favourite bands are Kiss, Good Charlotte, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Killers and Smash Mouth. Most of that music isn't really "girly" music, and to be honest I don't think there is a connection between sexuality and the kind of music you listen to.
EDIT: They also all have male band members.

Am I a bad lesbian for not knowing Tegan and Sara?
I must behave like a stereotypical feminine gay guy coz I absolutely love pop/"girly" music. Britney, Madonna, Spice girls, Kylie... If it's pop and "girly", I love it!

there is no girly music. the fact that I find grunge rock irritating gives very little view into my sexuality.
there are lines on who should listen to what purely because society likes to device us over one topic and use it as a definer. sadly society likes to use the idea of who you prefer to have sex with as the be all and end all line. but that's a discussion for another day.
it will be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end yet.

And you know what else is funny? That Gaga, Spears, Ke$ha, Katy Perry,... their shit is produced and sometimes written by STRAIGHT MALES. Maybe they just do it for the money, but, surely they find some of the stuff they make catchy? Though I guess that's like males who make lengerie companies... they probably don't wear it.
Also @PandaBubbaXx I thought you identified as a girl.

I do like girly music, mostly Japanese stuff. I have a thing for rather crazy sounding bubblegum pop Not that mainstream shit, though I do think it has it's good stuff to avoid sounding like a hipster. Early Ke-dollar sign-ha and Gaga stuff is well produced and fun to listen to, and even though Katy Perry has, in one music critic's words, 'negative amounts of talent', she's what you would call an immensely guilty pleasure. I guess the crazy, creative pop is like a rollercoaster and mainstream processed pop is like candy floss. Both are fun while they last, but one leaves a thrilled feeling and the other leaves you with a desire to throw up.
That being said, I actually really like what would be called 'masculine' music: metal I'm really into, rap not so much, but both have their good and bad stuff. I kinda just listen to it if it's good. And while I do prefer female singers, I can fully appreciate music made by males.
And I think Tegan and Sara are alright.
Believe in the you that believes in you.
No, I don't know what that means.

Hm, I can see how one may think this however I on the other hand can only think of one female artist who I like and that's Pink. I can honestly say that while I like Lady Gaga's message her music gets on my nerves and Adell is a good singer but her music is so overplayed that I'm sick and tired of listening to her. While I will admit that every now and then I'll hear a song on the radio that is sung by a girl and end up liking it I usually don't fall in love with the artist themselves. The only artists that I've heard on the radio and have fallen in love with are male artists/bands like Cage the Elephant, Gorillaz (which does have some woman in it but for the most part the majority of their songs are sung by males), Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, Foster the People, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc.
So while I do like some songs sung by female artists I am not actually in love with that many of the actual female artists themselves, and that's that. =P

Haha I HATE girly music for the most part! Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj... Screw that! (however Nicki's Stupid Hoe song is hilarious). I much prefer metal, like Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold and Machinehead. However I still do adore showtunes and musicals.
