Kenteroo is perpetually tired..., indefinitely [Avatar]
Incest, for those of us who do not know, relates to sexual relations between close relatives. The practice of incest is often illegal and taboo in many parts of the world. It is a controversial topic for many people and it appears that many societies find it easier to ban incest, rather than to find middle ground to the issue. Many rationalize the stigma attached to incest with arguments that include genetic fallibility, people’s consent, and the general population’s morality. While our society frowns upon incest and it does come with certain risks, there are legitimate reasons to sanction, or at least tolerate, incest.

One of the most pressing concerns with incest is whether the offspring of incestuous couples are at risk of being genetically inferior to non-incestuous couples. While it is true that there is a slight increase in the possibility of a genetic disorder occurring in the offspring derived from incestuous couples, it is often very slight. First cousins, for example, are likely to produce viable offspring 93% of the time compared to the 96% for the general population – a mere 3% difference. We should also take into consideration the many genetic defects that are naturally occurring in our population e.g., 9-11% of people with African roots possess sickle-celled anemia. In this case, should we sterilize every single person who carries genes for sickle-celled anemia and ban them from marriage and sexual reproduction? While the risks are low, a possible compromise to genetic risk is to encourage the adoption of orphaned children by those who may have a chance of passing on genetic defects.

Consent of both partners in an incestuous relationship is a worrisome concern to many people who regard it as unthinkable. If one partner is forcibly coercing the other into a relationship, how can we detect it? How can we be sure when we come to a conclusion? The answer is we cannot know; it is up to the adults in the relationship to determine whether such a relationship would be in their best interests. However, what we do know is that 92% of all marriages in India and 60% in the rest of the world are arranged, often without consent from either the bride or groom. Just how many of the 92% of arranged-marriages in a country, which boasts a population of over one-billion, be of consent? The truth is, many are not, and yet, since it is socially acceptable, this tradition will continue without conflict.

When it comes to incest, it is often a test of morals for many people. Incest has been taboo for many centuries mainly because it may pose unwanted genetic repercussions. Some may cite the bible as a definitive source ruling against incest, when there are actually numerous precedents of incestuous relationships in the book, including Abraham and Sara, Lot and his daughters, and the offspring of Adam and Eve. If it were a question of morals, we should consider the many “immoral” things that are legal in today’s society, which include, but are not limited to adultery, alcohol-abuse, senseless wars, and pornography. Our society is constantly changing and it appears that morality is certainly in the eye of the beholder. What some may have considered immoral in the past, we consider acceptable now. Centuries ago, incest was perfectly normal in the royal families of England and even encouraged. Not too long ago, homosexuality was a sin worthy of lynching; today, many of us tolerate homosexuality, and in some jurisdictions, homosexuals have marriage rights in America. As seen in the case of homosexuality, many people are developing different views that deviate from the social norm and creating a new definition of what is “right” or “wrong” based on new perspectives. Incest, in our society, should be a topic worth looking at twice. Many would say it is wrong to separate two people in love, and such is the case with incestuous relationships. Before we condemn incest, we should properly evaluate this multi-faceted issue without bias. The genetic defects many are concerned with are often low and certain disorders are even more prominent in “regular” couples. In the case of consent, we cannot know if couples are truly consenting, but with such a stigma attached to incest, those abused are unable to reach out for help because of the society-imposed shame associated with incest. If it is a case of morals, consider that our society is constantly changing and what may have been intolerable a few decades ago can now celebrated today. As members of society, we should thoroughly examine all the facts and see through the smoke that distorts our views on incest before condemning it and the happiness of many couples who may happen to harbor incestuous feelings. While incest may not be the best, it is certainly not the worst thing to happen to our society by a long shot.

I know the title may not be grammatically correct, but it's an allusion to that on old saying...

Err. So this shitty essay is due tomorrow. Any errors? MS Word is never reliable and I'm sooo sleepy...

Meh, in some cultures it's normal. "Keep it in the family"
The only thing I really have a problem with is if they were to have children.

if you take the creation theory religions use as the only way people can exist then no matter what we are all family - so they really create their own selves as hypocrites since how do you think there is billions of people if not for incest

creation is all started with adam and eve so how did the world go past those 2 people if not for incest since no other people existed

religions like their own little fantasy world and change the facts to fit what they want to hear

Actually, I think it was something like a bone from Adam created Eve and then they had offspring and those kids procreated to make the rest of the population.

Kuipo, why is it that terrible for those involved to have children? What of people who carry "defective," recessive genes or those who have a pair of them? Shall they be prohibited from copulation and reproduction? Ooh, here's a great idea. Let's "purify" the human race and we won't have this "problem" anymore...

Really? I hope that wasn't terribly researched. To my understanding, Adam and Eve had kids and it was those kids that created the population. No? I'm not really privy to religion.

I get all your points, but I still can't get past the whole related part. I mean if I found some guy hot and then found out he was related to me I'd immediately be turned off.

I can't really talk negativity of incest. My family have lived in the same village for well over 200 years, and were the original land owners of all the current village (I believe). My Great-Uncle has traced my family back to the 1600's. So 400 years of family, with half of that in the village. Although there are only 20-odd of us left here now.

I have found out (through the family tree) I am my own 5th, 8th, 10th and 14th cousin.... Yay!! ¬_¬ Ok, so 5th and above is nothing and I wouldn't even really count my actual 5th cousins as a 'relation'.

So relationships between cousins? Yes for me (not me personally though).
Relationships between brother/sister.. not so much.

I could never see myself participating in incest, but I don't have any problem with others doing it, as long as I'm not part of it then it's none of my business. And the common phrase "to each their own" always sounded incestuous to me.
