Moved from Starbucks to Queer Thinking |
I was watching this documentary about this boy, who was straight as ever and he unfortunately got into a coma... and awoke gay!
I think his name was Chris Birch? or Chris Bird... anyways he was perfectly straight before and remembers slightly about being straight (he lost some memory during his coma.) His friends and family, most of them, didnt want to keep in contact with him, his mother especially. People couldn't cope with the "new" him...
So my question is, What do you guys think about this?
Does this support or make you believe in our sexuality CAN be changed? Its all psychological? How do you think (if he was straight then turned gay) this happened, chemical reactions in the Brain ect. ect.
ALL VIEWS ACCEPTED: RELIGIOUS, NON-RELIGIOUS, SCIENTIFIC, or just a hypothesis!
Interviewer: According to you, the girls run the world - but what do you think about the girls and the gays teaming up and running the world together?
Beyoncé: Well, that's what I meant when I said girls. (Laughs)

Being gay has already been proven not pyschological, however cases of straight people being pyschologically gay has occured. This seems logical in a way, coma's have strange effects on people, their brains can rewire themselves and believe things that never happened. This is the first time coma's caused sexuality change.
There is no hope without salvation, there is no life without destruction, in this desolate world we can only rely on the unknown for our minds shame the very ground.

Actually your brain chemistry drastically changes all the time. Does that mean that ppl's sexual orientation is constantly changing with it? The brain is a completely unpredictable and powerful thing.

Well I cant say I know whats going on here. But if I had to guess something must've happened either relativley close to the beggining of his comatose or during it that caused him to swing in the other direction.
Perplexing.

This is the guy:

Some people gain talents they never had after comas. It almost makes me wish I had one. xD But some people just die, or get weaker or become handicapped. And some people are unchanged completely, like a friend of mine.

I feel so bad for him waking up and everyone abandoning him like that. It's entirely possible that he was in the closet before he went into a coma, and when he awoke the part of his brain that says "hey, don't tell the haters" was wiped?

Yeah on the documentary another man had a coma and awoke to be a fantastic artist, it was asif his years of coma had closed him off and he had to unleash this creativity! It is truely amazing!
And i dont 'like' homophobes, but i DO understand why they may think differently of the LGBT community, just like i understand why people think different of different races. Equality will NEVER be achieved, as we are not all equal in all aspects, but acceptance can be!

Yeah, that is real crazy. Maybe they were having lucid experiences in their coma that actually put them on different grids/speeds of thought, . I wonder if they have a stronger connection to their subconscious now...

Heh, my entire flat watched this together (after one had, predictably enough, turned to me and asked "doesn't that happen to you every day?") and we had a pretty interesting conversation about it afterwards. Essentially, I think that everyone has the potential to be gay just as everyone has the potential to be straight or a good artist or bad tempered or anything at all, really. So it's perfectly feasible to live your life as one thing and become someone different after something like that comes along and messes with the brain.

Homosexuality isn't fully understood, but it is clearly based on a variety of factors. Certainly you are genetically predisposed to it, but a huge number of identical twins are of two different sexual orientations so it can't be all genetics. It can be influenced by environment and it can also be about different factors in the brain. So I could see how a head injury might change our sexuality, since they've been known to change people in countless other ways.
It is terrible about his family though.

Yes, sexuality is fluid over time, but if I had to say, it sounds like he came from a family that wasn't particularly accepting and needed an excuse/alternate explanation for being gay, and the coma provided just that.

ok, i think i brought this up before, but ill bring up this point again
i want to bring up Phineas Gage.
if you dont know who he is he is basically this railroad worker who during the 1800s had a railroad spike driven through his skull.
he survived, but he went from being a pretty nice guy, to being a total douche.
(if u wanna know more: http://www.neatorama.com/2010/...-phineas-gage/)
anyway, this story is pretty famous among neurologists because of what happened to his personality after his accident. something like this could have happened to this guy, because a stroke can really mess someone up. it can lead to neurological issues, as well as other physical issues.

I remember seeing this online somewhere.
I think thats horrible the way they left him, but since a stroke has the potential to change your entire personality, it really did prove that being gay is your personality, not choice.

woah. I googled his name and found this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/hea...t-hes-been.html
he didn't just turn gay, he turned steriotype gay. I can imagine that it would have been hard for his family and friends to deal with such a huge personality change. Of course, that doesn't justify their behavior.

I feel kind of bad saying this, especially as I'm not involved in the situation and don't know what it's like etc., but hey- this is the internet, home of honest and hurtful opinions, so here goes:
I'm having a hard time believing someone would magically turn gay after waking up from a coma.
Maybe the accident and the stroke provided a clean break to finally come out to family and friends? A sudden realisation that 'life's too short' made the guy come out to himself and then the world?
I don't know, but really? I don't think having a stroke could turn someone gay :/
