*Just a note Brynn is pronounced Brin*
You don't get to choose who you fall in love with. And no one is important enough to tell you who to love. My name is Brynn Tyler. I am 17 years old and in love. This is the story of that love; from where it all began.
It was a bright, sunny, summer day when I moved into my new house. I was only 5 but I remember everything like it was yesterday. I remember I was very excited because a boy and a girl my age lived right next door. The first thing I did when we were settled into our new house is march next-door, knock on the door, and introduce myself,
"Well hello there sweetie. What's your name?
"I'm Brynn Tyler. I’m 5. I just moved in next door.” I pointed to where I lived. “I heard two kids my age lived here. Well do they?"
“Yes, that must be my son and daughter. I’ll go get them. You stay right here, I’ll just be a second. By the way, I’m Mrs. Rivers.”
“Ok Mrs. Rivers, I’ll wait here.”
While Mrs. Rivers went to get her kids I looked around. They had a really nice house. They even had a pool. Mrs. Rivers returned along with her, two blond kids.
“Brynn, this is my son Camden and my daughter Melanie. They are both 5 too. Say hello to your new neighbor; Brynn.”
“Hi Brynn, I’m Camden.”
“Hi Camden, I’m Brynn.”
“Hi Brynn, I’m Melanie.”
“Hi Melanie, I’m Brynn. I can tell us three are going to be great friends.”
And we were. Camden, Melanie and I were really good friends. We played together all the time. We went swimming in their pool, hung out in my basement, and did all sorts of things together. As the years went by, Cam started drifting off and doing his own thing. Melanie and I were ok with that. We became closer and closer over the years, we were practically sisters. Then we hit middle school and all that began to change. We were still really good friends, but I had a really hard time adjusting to life in middle school. I wasn’t making friends as easily as I used to. In fact, I really didn’t have any friends other than Melanie. Melanie, on the other hand, had no trouble at all making new friends. By the time I had made a couple of friends from the different clubs I was in, Melanie had the biggest group of friends you could possibly imagine. I felt left out at times but Melanie never let me forget that I was still her best friend. We still spent every weekend together. I would either sleep over her house or she would sleep over mine. It was the summer before eighth grade when everything began to change. Melanie and I realized that our friendship might be something more. We were almost eighth graders so we heard the rumors about girls going out with girls and guys going out with guys so obviously we heard all the crap they got from everyone else. That summer was the second most important summer of our lives. It was that summer that we realized we were in love. We started off small, holding hands, hugging, and things like that. We spent the entire summer joined at the hip. We wanted to enter 8th grade as a couple, but we were scared of the bullying we would face. We really cared about each other but we were just too scared. We entered eighth grade together- as friends. Melanie and I were together throughout 8th grade, not publically, but still together. Melanie and I had a huge fight and the end of 8th grade. If you saw us together you would know that we really together, from the way we looked at each other, the way we acted around each other. Apparently it was kind of obvious. That’s when the rumors began to fly. Someone started a rumor that we were together, that we were girlfriends. There were other rumors too, some more civil than others. Of course most of the rumors were dead on, but we weren’t ready to admit it to anyone yet. So we started denying anything anyone said about us. To stop the rumors Melanie wanted to go as far as to get a boyfriend. This caused one of the biggest fights we ever had. We were both terrified that we would be found out. Melanie really thought that getting a boyfriend would be the best idea. I strongly disagreed. I finally agreed because we were sick of living every day in fear that someone would find out about us. Melanie decided that she was going to ask out a boy named Matt Bennet. Matthew was a pretty average looking guy and agreed to go out with Melanie. They went public the next day. By this time we were almost done with our freshman year of high school. Melanie’s brother Camden started high school with us considering he was Mel’s twin. Cam had been the first person to know about us. He found out the summer before 9th grade began. He had been suspicious for a while and one day he just turned and asked me,
“Are you dating my sister?”
I didn’t know what to say. I was speechless. So he turned to his twin sister and said, “Well are you?”
Mel replied, “Yes we are dating. We have been for almost a year now. Please don’t tell mom and dad.”
Cam said, “Of course not. I figured you girls were together.”
Cam never mentioned it again. We guessed that he really didn’t care or forgot, which is why it surprised me when he came to me and asked,
“Did you and my sister break up?”
I answered, “No why?”
“Then why don’t I ever see guys together at school? Also why is she walking around holding hands with Matt Bennet?”
“It’s complicated. I got to go. Talk to you later.”
“Bye Brynn. Good luck.”
I walked around school for a while looking for Mel. By the time I found her I was furious. I was so tired of hiding. I had wanted to be with her so bad I couldn’t take it anymore. I walked over to her where she was standing with a bunch of her friends.
“How could you? REALLY, holding hands?! Are you kidding me? How could you do that to me, to US!!!?” I turned to walk away. Mel grabbed me by the wrist, swung me around and kissed me, full on the lips. Her friends turned and stared. I whispered in her ear,
“Shutting me up with a kiss, really?!” We broke apart and smiled at each other. She turned to her friends and said,
“Yeah, you saw that. That happened. Get over it. Let the talk begin. This is my girlfriend Brynn, and I don’t mean friend-that’s-a-girl. I mean I love her, I have since I first met her. We’ve been dating for almost 3 years. Oh, Brynn, these are my friends, Alec, Jordan, Tessa, and Bethany. At least I think they’re my friends.” Mel gave them a couple of seconds to answer. When they didn’t she grabbed my hand and walked off dragging me along with her.

We didn’t get very far when Bethany called,
“Hey wait Melanie, wait up.” We slowed down so she could catch up with us.
“What do you want Bethany, you’re gonna make us late for our bus.”
“I just wanted to say that I didn’t care. And plus we were supposed to hang out after school. Remember? We were gonna go swimming in your pool.”
“You still want to, really?” Mel turned to me and asked,
“Are you ok with that?”
“Yeah, go ahead. I don’t care. Have fun with your friends.”
“Are you sure you don’t mind?”
“YES! But make your decision quickly or we’re gonna miss our bus.”
“Okay Bethany. Let’s go. I’ll show you the way to our bus.”
“Okay.” Bethany replied. Mel and I walked the rest of the way to our bus hand-in-hand with Bethany following close behind. We got on and sat down, Bethany sitting in the seat across from us. It took us about 10 minutes to get home. When we reached our stop we got off and walked the rest of the way to our side-by-side houses. We stopped in front of my house like we always do. Usually she would come inside for a bit, but today Bethany was with her. We stood awkwardly for a minute until Bethany said,
“You guys can hug and kiss or whatever. Like I said, I don’t really care.” That let out a lot of pent up tension. We hugged and kissed and said our good-byes and went our separate ways. Later that night our parents, who by then had become really good friends, decided to take our families out to dinner. Bethany went home and in the car on the way to the restaurant I leaned over and whispered to her,
“How’d it go with Bethany?”
She replied, “It went pretty good. It was kind of weird at first at first but then I figured out that she really didn’t care and we had a nice heart-to-heart.”
We reached the restaurant and went inside. When we were seated at our table, Mel’s parents asked me something I wasn’t prepared for. They asked me if I wanted to join them after sophomore year on a trip to their parents, Mel’s grandparents’ beach house in Hawaii. I looked to my parents for approval and they nodded and I practically screamed to the Rivers’,
“YES.” I was ecstatic. I would get to spend an entire summer with Mel, in a beach house, and in HAWAII! The only downside to the trip is that it was a little over a year away but Mel and I didn’t care. Freshman year ended on a bad not. People were relentlessly making fun of us, starting rumors, and just being downright mean. So when school ended we were relieved to be set free and able to plan what we would be doing a year from now. We spent a summer in joyful bliss. Our parents didn’t exactly know about us yet. We spent as much time as we wanted together. Our parents were impressed that we had stayed friends this long. We dreaded going back to school. Everyone already knew about us so there was no point in hiding. We were terrified of the bullying we would face. We were afraid that it that it might get harsher or even worse, physical. The more we worried about it the faster the first day of school approached. Before we knew it, it was the Saturday before we went back to start our sophomore year of high school. We were hanging in my bedroom, laying on my bed panicking. We didn’t know what to do, how to face all our friends, and we didn’t know what to wear. Every item of clothing I owned was strewn around my room. We had both decided that we were going to wear jeans. We didn’t know what to wear for a shirt. We didn’t know how to make it casual but not sloppy, but not overly dressy. It was hard being a girl sometimes. We finally decided on shirts and promptly went back to panicking about people. We had already decided to start school as a couple and now we were bracing ourselves for the worst thing coming at us. We practiced steeling ourselves against anything. We were ready. It was 9:00 pm the Sunday before school, for the first time in 3 years we were starting school as girlfriends. The bus ride to school that day was not very exciting because the kids on our bus either didn’t care or were too tired to notice. As we got nearer and nearer to the school, Mel and I got more and more nervous. We whispered quietly to each other from the front seat of the bus,
“Do you really think we should be doing this?” I asked.
“Yeah, I do. We shouldn’t have waited this long to come out.”
“Yeah, I agree. Well, here we go.” I said as we pulled up to the front doors of the high school. We climbed down the stairs of the bus, took each other’s hand, and walked into school without a backwards glance. We were both terrified as we walked through the doors. We grasped each other’s hands tightly as we made our way through the ocean of stares and whispers. We made our way to my locker and then to Mel’s, standing close together never daring to leave the other’s side. Who knew what would happen if one of us was alone. We made our way to my first class which was biology. Mel’s first class was geometry which was right down the hall. We stood in front of the doorway, unsure of what to do. The warning bell rang and I said to Mel,
“We can do this. You have to go or you’ll be late. We’ll see each other in our next class anyways, I mean since we both have English.”
“True, okay, I’ll meet you here after class and we’ll walk together. I’ll see you after class.”
“K Mel, bye, I love you.” I said.
“I love you too.” she replied. We hugged and kissed and went to our separate classes. That first hour of class was the longest hour in the history of hours. By the time class was over it seemed like an eternity had gone by. I counted down the seconds until the bell would ring. When it finally did there was never a more sweet or beautiful sound in the world. Mel was waiting outside the room, just as promised. When she saw me she rushed over and wrapped me up in a powerful hug. I whispered in her ear,
“Did you miss me?” She laughed and together we made our way to English.
Most of our days went like that until we realized that there weren’t swarms of people hovering around us. We gradually became more confident and more relaxed. We weren’t always looking over our shoulders anymore. We officially came out to all our friends. Most of them didn’t care, but there were still the few that gave us weird looks whenever they saw us together. Why couldn’t people get over the fact that Mel and I were together?! The days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months and before we knew it there were only a couple of weeks until school got out, a couple of weeks until our vacation to Hawaii. On a better note our sweet 16 was a big success. Since my birthday was really close to Mel and Cam’s we usually had joint parties. That year we were debating whether or not to have sweet sixteen. We finally decided that we should because it was pretty much a rite of passage for the teenage girl.

We decided on a location and were toying with the theme of a masquerade ball, that way no one would know who’s who. We sent out invitations to our entire grade, plus some to kids we knew who were younger or older. We sent invitations to probably around 300 people. All of them answered back within a week saying that they could come. Our sweet sixteen was going to be HUGE. There was only a slight problem, everyone that was coming knew about Mel and me. We were surprised that everyone said yes, apparently they couldn’t resist a good party. The problem was; everyone at the party knew about Mel and I; everyone except our parents. Now Mel and I were in a predicament. We had two very different options. We could either come out to our parents on the night of our sweet sixteen or we could pretty close to ignore each other the entire night, dancing with everybody but each other. We couldn’t decide which one would be more painful, but then realized that if we kept our dresses a secret no one, including our parents, would know who we are because of our masquerade theme. The night of our party rolled around and our parents drove us to the location a couple hours early to help set up. We weren’t, and didn’t need to be, in our dresses yet. People started showing up with their masks already on. There were about 50 people in the room when Mel and I decided to get into costume. We put on our dresses. To make sure we always knew who the other was, I wrote Brynn on my hand, and Mel, her name on her hand. We put on our masks and headed out into the ocean of people hand-in-hand, unafraid, because for tonight no one knows who we are. When we entered the ballroom the sounds was enormous. Everyone was laughing and talking. The music was blasting at full volume. Everybody in the room was dancing. We walked over to where a group of our friends said they would be. By the time we found them the party was in full swing. There were at least 400 people there, if not more. It seemed like everybody we invited had brought a friend. We didn’t care. The DJ we hired played a LOT of slow songs which suited Mel and I just fine, we love slow dancing together. We love to be that close to each other; we love each other and were very happy to be that close together in public without any worries. Our sweet sixteen went off without a hitch. Afterwards, while cleaning up, Mel and I couldn’t stop smiling at each other. Whenever we made eye contact we would start giggling. Our parents, who had stayed to help us clean up, looked at us like we were lunatics. We had had such a good time and no one had said or done anything to ruin it. That fact made us so relieved and happy. We couldn’t get over the fact that nothing had gone wrong! We were convinced that it was too good to be true. When we returned to school the only thing anyone was talking about was our party. And better yet, they were talking about it in a good way. They were saying things like,
“OMG! Were you at Brynn and Melanie’s sweet sixteen? It was amazing!” and “I had such a great time!”
They weren’t making fun of it! I mean of course there were the few that gave us looks on a regular basis, but other than that life was pretty good. Mel and I were riding on the high of our party for days. Before we knew it, there were only two days left before the last day of school. After that there were only 3 days until we left for Hawaii for the summer. Melanie and I were living in complete and utter bliss. The two days before that last day of school went by in the blink of an eye. Also nothing bad happened since the day of our party. On the last day of school we said good-bye to all our friends and they wished us a great summer. Mel and I could barely contain our excitement for our summer plans. The day after school got out, Mel and I went to the mall to get a new summer wardrobe. We bought strapless summer sundresses, new bikini bathing suits, summer sandals, and lots of new t-shirts and shorts. When we had reached our budget we went and had lunch together in the mall food court. We spent the entire next day packing for Hawaii. We packed our newly purchased dresses, bikinis, sandals, t-shirts, and shorts. We each packed a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt just in case it got cold. The day before our trip was spent making last minute changes, packing last minute decisions, and convincing our parents to let us have a sleepover. They finally agreed because we could sleep on the plane ride the next day. We stayed up all night, too excited to fall asleep. The next morning came and we left Mel’s house at 3:00 am for the hour drive to the airport. We got there around 4:00 am and had plenty of time to make our 6:30 am flight. We boarded our flight around 6:15 am. When booking the flight, Mr. and Mrs. Rivers messed up a bit, so their seats were in the WAY back of the plane and Cam’s, Mel’s and mine were near the middle. Thankfully Cam, Mel, and I were all seated in the same row. The plane took off and we settled in for the six hour flight to LA and then the connecting flight from LA to Hawaii. We were supposed to reach Hawaii between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm. None of us cared, twelve hours on an airplane seemed like a very small price to pay for a summer in Hawaii. By the time we touched down in Hawaii Mel, Cam, and I were practically jumping out of our seats. Our first impression of Hawaii is that it was VERY beautiful. The weather was gorgeous. It took us about an hour to get to the beach house so it was about 8:30 by the time we were really settled in. We all decided to unpack that night so it was 9:30 when we were done. We were all exhausted from traveling all day so we decided to go to bed. The house had 4 floors, the first floor which was the main floor with French doors that opened to almost directly onto the beach. The second floor had the master bedroom where Mel’s grandparents slept. They weren’t there because they went on a month long trip to England; they would be back later in the summer. Also on the second floor was a guest master bedroom where Mel’s parents would be staying. On the third floor there was on bedroom that Camden would be staying in along with a game room and a library. The fourth floor was pretty much just a loft. In it were 2 double sized beds, that when pushed together created a huge bed for Mel and I to sleep on. That bed was the most comfortable thing you could sleep on EVER. This was partly because Mel slept beside me and partly because this bed really was very comfortable. Before we fell asleep Mel whispered,
“I love you Brynn. Good-night.” I whispered back,
“I love you too, Mel. Oh, we’re getting up at 5:30 am tomorrow.”
“WHY?!” Mel whisper- screamed.
“You’ll see. Love you Mel, good night,” I giggled in a sing-song voice.
“Fine, good-night,” Mel grumbled. The next morning my alarm went off at around 5:00 am. I immediately started trying to wake Mel up. I shook her and shook her. Five minutes of shaking later I get a garbled,
“What do you want, Brynn?”
“It’s time to get up Mel. I have something cool to show you.” I receive another mumbled response of,
“No Brynn. Go away; it’s too early for anything other than sleep to be cool!”
By this time I knew Mel was awake. I mean, what half asleep person can form intelligent sentences? I pounced on her, before she could scream I clamped my hand over her mouth. She gave me the most evil stare you could imagine, grabbed my wrist, peeled my hand from her mouth, and flipped me over pinning me on my back. She gave me a kiss and let me up asking,
“What is so important that I have to get up at the butt crack of dawn for?”
I grabbed her by the hand, dragged her out of bed, and onto the balcony that overlooked the beach. We made it just in time.
"And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before."

“It’s beautiful.”
“I know. That’s why I wanted you to see it.”
“Thank-you so much for showing me that, it’s gorgeous.”
“No problem.”
We stood hand-in-hand just watching until we heard people in the house begin to wake up and move around. We went inside and got dressed for the day; a bikini with a strapless sundress for a cover-up. We packed a beach bag with all the essentials in it; towels, sunscreen, a pair of sunglasses a piece, some money, and of course flip-flops. We went downstairs to the kitchen, ate breakfast, and asked Mel’s parents if we could head to the beach. They said yes but told us to be back in time for lunch. We were having lobster, which Mel and I both love. We headed across the patio and down a flight of stairs and voila, we were on the beach. We set up our beach stuff, stripped off our dresses and ran screaming into the ocean. The water was actually really warm. We stayed in the water for a while. We got out and were laying on our towels when a group of kids our age walked up to us and said,
“Hey Melanie, how have you been?” Mel replied to the boy, who seemed like the leader of the group,
“Good CJ, how are you?”
“I’m great, who’s your friend?”
“Well CJ, this is my girlfriend Brynn Tyler. I told you about her last year. Brynn these are my summer friends, CJ Marks and his girlfriend Meaghan Perkins, Taylor Marks and her girlfriend Tegan Hart, and Sean Hart and his girlfriend Lissa Perkins.”
“Oh, hey Brynn, nice to finally meet you. How long have you and Melanie been going out?”
“Ummmm… about 4 years. Well, actually it will be 4 years tomorrow.”
“Oh, cool. Well we got to go, but we’re having a bonfire party tomorrow. You could meet us here around evening time if you want to come. You could celebrate you four-year with us. Well, bye Melanie, and it was nice to meet you Brynn.”
“Nice to meet you, too,” I replied as Mel said,
“Bye guys.”
By that time, it was near lunch. Mel and I headed back to the house for our lobster. When we got there everyone looked like they were ready to go. Mel and I walked in and said to her mom, dad, and Camden,
“Were you guys going to leave without us?” The silence was deafening. Mel and I looked at each other and the back at her parents. We asked them,
“Is something wrong?” They looked at us and Camden said,
“They saw you together on the beach this morning. They also heard most of what you said to CJ. Mel, they know about you guys. And we were going to leave without you. Mom and Dad wanted to wait until after lunch to talk.”
As Cam said this he was practically being dragged out the door by Mrs. Rivers. She gave us a disgusted look as Mr. Rivers looked on apologetically. They left the house leaving Mel and I in their dust. We looked at each other, stunned. Why did this have to happen now, in the middle of our Hawaii trip?! Now what were we supposed to do? Giving all that had happened Mel and I were kinda disappointed. We were actually looking forward to having that lobster. Mel and I ran up to our shared room and Mel collapsed on the floor in tears. I went over and put my arm around her and whispered,
“It’s gonna be ok.”
“HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT?!” she screamed, “IT’S NOT YOUR PARENTS THAT JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT YOUR SECRET FOUR YEAR LESBIAN REALATIONSHIP WITH YOUR NEIGHBOR, MY LIFE IS OVER!! I’ll never get to go anywhere. I’ll never get to see you, to be with you again,” she wailed. I let out a sigh of relief; she still wanted to be with me.
“My parents are gonna find out. Your parents are gonna tell them.”
By this time I was in tears too. I had no idea what we were going to do. We had gone through too much to break up now. On top of it all, Mel’s grandparents were coming back tomorrow. We waited upstairs in our loft until Mel’s parents’ car pulled back into the driveway from lunch. We waited minute after painstaking minute. We were waiting for them to come and talk to us. We decided we couldn’t wait any longer. We went looking for Mel’s parents. As we walked around we came across Camden’s bedroom. He was in there talking to CJ and Sean. They were deep into conversation and their topic of discussion; us. We stood in the door quietly, listening.
“… and my grandparents are coming back 2 weeks early because they wanted to meet Brynn. That is going to be a very uncomfortable time. What are we going to do? I want to help Melanie, I mean she’s my twin, and Brynn too. She’s close enough to be my sister. Mom is beyond angry and the worst thing she is legitimately disgusted by the fact that Mel is dating another girl. I don’t know what to do. What did you guys do when your sisters came out to your parents?”
"And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before."

Sean spoke first, “It was a very weird day the day Tegan came out. My parents said we were having a ‘family discussion’. At first Tegan and I thought they were gonna tell us that someone had died. Then they started talking about life. They were being SO nosy. They asked me if I was in a relationship or not. Of course I had been going out with Liss for a while so I told them that. Then they turned to Tegan. They said to her,
‘Have you found a nice boy to date yet? If not we are always here for you. Some of our coworkers have very sweet boys you could meet, like that nice Marks boy.’
They were treating her like she was incapable of finding her own boyfriend. By this time Tegan was incredibly upset. I didn’t know about her at the time and so it really surprised me when she put into words a secret she must have been holding on to for some time. She said,
‘You’ll always be there for me, really?’ My parents nodded and Tegan continued, ‘Well I am dating a Marks.’
‘Good for you, I bet he is really nice. You’ll have to invite him over some time so your father and I can get to know him. His name is CJ, right?’
‘Hold on Mom, I never said I was dating CJ Marks, I said I was dating A Marks.’
‘Well of course you’re dating CJ, who else would you be dating, there aren’t any other boys in that family.’
‘EXACTLY Mom, there aren’t any other boys in that family. But I’m not dating CJ!’
‘But honey… there aren’t any other…’
‘There aren’t any buts. Mom you don’t get it; I’m not dating CJ Marks! I’m dating Taylor Marks! Geez get it through your head; I’m not dating CJ, I’m dating his sister Taylor!’
By that time I had already figured it out. I knew CJ was dating Meaghan so there was only one other Marks. My dad was more upset than my mom. He still is but he tries to hide it whenever Tegan and Taylor are together. He sees how happy Taylor makes Tegan. My mom didn’t really care at all, she was happy that Tegan had found someone that made her happy. Obviously I didn’t care either.”
CJ spoke next, “My mom was upset when Taylor came out. She cried for hours. She was mainly just surprised but eventually got over it and was happy for Taylor. But it took her an entire day to get up the courage to ask Taylor who she was with. My mom was a little bit shocked when Taylor told her she was with Tegan Hart. Other than that everyone was fine with them. I had known for a couple of days before Taylor came out only because Tegan had come out the week before and Sean told me that our sisters were dating.”
Cam started by saying, “Thanks. I hope my parents will be similar but I really doubt it.” Cam started laughing, “How long are you girls gonna stand in the doorway? You can come in you know.”
We laughed too and walked in. Mel sat in one of the beanbag chairs and I sat on the floor beside her and put my head in her lap. She laughed and started to braid my hair. Cam, CJ, Sean, Mel, and I sat there for a while just talking about life. It was one of the best conversations I’d had in a really long time. Mel and I had almost forgotten about Mel’s parents when they walked in. They asked Mel and me to come with them. We got up in followed them into their bedroom. We were terrified about what was to come. The conversation was actually pretty calm. There were only two things that made us a bit unhappy, but we had been expecting them. They told us that I would have to move into the guest bedroom and that when we got back I would have to tell my parents, or they would. We guessed the first one. I was pretty happy that they were letting ME tell my parents. The only thing that made us really unhappy and that we were not expecting was that they said that we had to pretend that we were just friends for the time that Mel’s grandparents were there. We were sick of pretending but could deal with the time they were here. At least Mel’s parents hadn’t forced us to break up. That fact made us pretty happy. We went to bed that night, for the last night in the same bed, relatively happy. We didn’t have to break up. Mel’s grandparents were coming tomorrow and we would have to pretend we were just friends. Tomorrow would be an adventure but tonight, it was just us, we were the only thing that mattered. Sadly the next day came faster than we had imagined. This was probably because of the fact that Mel and I had spent most of the night trying to come up with ways to NOT act like we were together. It was harder than you would think. Now that Mel’s parents knew we thought we were done hiding but we knew that we could survive through anything. Mel’s parents flitted about the house making last minute changes and yelling at everyone to clean their rooms. They moved me into the guest room. They had to go to the grocery store to pick up ingredients for the special meal that they were planning for the grandparents. They were coming in just one short hour. Mel and I took this opportunity to sneak up to our loft, well Mel’s loft now, to just enjoy each other’s company. We spent the remaining amount of time holed up in that loft. We only went downstairs when Mrs. Rivers yelled up to us,
“MELANIE, come downstairs, your grandparents are here.”
“K, mom, I’m coming.” Mel looked at me, took a deep breath and we walked downstairs. Mel’s grandparents were waiting in the kitchen looking quite happy to see Mel, and I guess, to meet me. Mel’s grandma wrapped Mel up in a big hug, asked her how she was and then turned to me asking Mel,
“Why Melanie, aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend?”
“Sorry, Grandma, this is my best friend Brynn Tyler. Brynn this is my grandma. Ummmm… what should Brynn call you Grandma?”
“Oh Brynnie, you can just call me Grandma, like Melanie.”
“Hi Grandma, nice to meet you, Melanie is one of my very best friends.”
“Oh, Melanie, your friend is so sweet and pretty too.”
“Ummmm, thanks? Well Brynn and I have plans and we’re gonna be late for them if we don’t leave soon. I’m sorry Grandma and you too Grandpa, we can catch up later but we gotta go.”
“Hold it right there Melanie Mae Rivers,” Mel’s mom shrieked. “You can’t just go running off without telling me where you are going and who you’ll be with.”
“MOM, geez, we are going to CJ’s bonfire party. It’s only on the beach. As for people we’ll be with; the usual people; CJ and Taylor Marks, Sean and Tegan Hart, and Lissa and Meaghan Perkins. I’m guessing Cam is coming too. Is that o.k. with you?”
"And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before."

“Melanie there is no need to be hostile. I don’t care, go ahead, have fun, but be back by eleven. Tell your brother the same thing. I don’t want you out too late”
Mel and I left, but not before Mrs. Rivers gave us a dirty look. We ran out of the house and onto the beach. Mel turned to me and smiled.
“We that was the most awkward 15 minutes in history,” she laughed.
“I would have to agree. But what are we going to do? The bonfire doesn’t start until sundown. We have at least an hour before we need to meet up with everyone.”
Mel smiled, “We can do whatever we want.”
Conveniently enough Mel and I were already in our bathing suits. We were only wearing cut-offs and t-shirts for cover-ups. We took them off and swam in the ocean until it started to get dark. We got out finding everyone waiting for us. They already had everything set up. They turned on the music and the party began. Melanie and I almost missed our curfew. We were having so much fun with our friends. We got back just in time, Mrs. Rivers still giving Mel and I dirty looks. We didn’t care because it was the best way anyone could have spent their four-year anniversary; on a beach surrounded by their friends. We went to bed that night in separate rooms. It all worked out because after Mel’s parents fell asleep Mel would sneak down to my ‘guest bedroom’ and take me by the hand and lead me up to her room where I would spend the night. I would have to wake up early the next morning so I could sneak back to my own room before anyone woke up. The next morning when everyone else was awake Mel and I would share a secret smile and go about our days as friends. The separate rooms were finally bearable because Mel and I had found a way around Mrs. Rivers’ orders. Most of our days went similar to this. Mel and I would escape to the beach or we would chat with Grandma or Grandpa in semi- awkward talks that got more comfortable over time. Things were going really great; the only problem was that Grandma hovered a bit. She would watch Mel and me constantly. We weren’t particularly worried until Grandma cornered us one day and asked,
“Is there something going on between you too?”
I said, “No, why would you think that?”
She replied, “I’ve been watching you two. There is definitely something going on.” Grandma surprised us both by saying, “Did you have some sort of thing prepared to tell me or can I just say it straight out?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I can tell you two are a couple. It’s adorable but I don’t know why you didn’t just tell me. Did you think that I would really care, or never find out?”
Mel and I looked at each other; we knew we were caught. But now what to do? We really wanted how she found out about us since the whole time she was at the house we were pretending that we weren’t together. So Mel asked,
“We tried really hard to make it so you WOULDN’T find out. Did we do that bad a job?”
“No you did a fine job. I caught Brynnie here sneaking up to your room one night while I was watching the stars. I followed her and overheard you two talking. Then she didn’t come out for a while so I did what any concerned grandmother would do, and checked in on you. I opened the door and saw you two curled adorably around each other, asleep. What I still don’t understand is why you didn’t just tell me.”
“Well, Mom didn’t want you to know. She said that she didn’t want to upset you. Grandpa doesn’t know yet either. Are you going to tell him?”
“Oh Mel, only if you want me to, who else your family knows, Brynnie?”
“No one Grandma, Mrs. Rivers is making me tell them all once I get back. But all my friends know, and they don’t really care.”
“Oh okay. Who else here knows, Mel?”
“Well, my mom, dad and brother all know, Camden was the first person to find out. Then my summer friends, CJ and his sister Taylor, Sean and his sister Tegan, Meaghan and her sister Lissa, they all found out on the beach the day before you came. They didn’t care because they’re all used to it. CJ and Sean’s sisters are together. And now you know.”
“Okay then, I’ll leave you two alone now. And just so you know I really should tell your parents about Brynn sneaking into your room… but… I’m not going to. I know what it’s like to be in love. You two don’t have to pretend around me. I won’t tell your parents I know if that’s what you want. If you have a secret, just tell me because I’m likely to find out anyway. It would save us both a lot of trouble.”
“Thank-you Grandma, and yes; please don’t tell my mom because she will just get angry with us and give us more dirty looks.”
“Do you want me to talk to her for you two? I bet I could talk a little bit of sense into her.”
“No it’s okay. I love you. We have to go now. We are gonna go hang out with Taylor and Tegan on the beach. This was a nice talk. We’ll see you when we get back, then we’ll talk more.”
“Okay, you have fun Mel, and you too Brynnie dear.”
“Thanks, Grandma, it means a lot. See you later,” we said together.
Mel and I ran out the door, across the patio, down the stairs, and onto the beach where we almost ran into Taylor and Tegan,
“Geez,” Tegan said, “Is there someone chasing you or something?”
“No,” Mel panted. I continued with, “We just had the most awkward conversation with Mel’s grandmother. I wasn’t sure we were gonna make here. It was a very interesting talk.”
“Oh,” Taylor said, “What was it about?” We hesitated until Taylor said,
“You don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to. Tegan and I have had our share of conversations that we don’t want to tell anyone about.”
“It’s not that,” I said, “It’s just that we’re afraid you’ll laugh.”
“We promise not to laugh, right Taylor?”
“Yeah, we promise not to laugh.”
“Okay, well Mel’s grandmother just found us out.”
“Why in the world would we laugh at THAT,” Taylor exclaimed. I continued,
“That’s not the funny thing. The funny thing is HOW she found out,” Mel continued,
“She caught Brynn sneaking into my room last night. Then, later in the night she caught us sleeping together.”
“She caught you SLEEPING TOGETHER?! Well I can see how that would be awkward.”
“Not in THAT way Tegan. Geez, get your mind out of the gutter. No we were literally sleeping together, like, asleep in the same bed, that’s all.”
“Oh, whoops, sorry. Well that’s still kinda awkward. Weren’t you trying to keep her from finding out?”
“Yeah, but that was for my mom’s sake. I don’t really care that she knows, in fact I kind of like it. I feel like I’m lying to one less person now.”
“When Tegan and I started introducing each other as girlfriends to our friends and family it felt really good too. It felt like a weight was lifted off your shoulders from the nerves of hiding all the time.”
“Yeah, that is definitely how it felt when Mel’s Grandma found out. Anyways what are we going to do today?”
“I don’t know. What do you want to do, Taylor,” Tegan asked.
“I don’t know, but we should decide soon or it will be too late to do anything.”
“Geez Tay you don’t have to be such a party pooper.”
Mel and I looked at each other and smiled.
“OMG we’ll also have to plan a good-bye party before you leave, won’t we Tegan?”
“Yeah, definitely, we should tell the others, they’ll want to help out too. We’ll tell them later.”
“Cool, sounds like fun but what are we going to do today?” I asked.
“We have the perfect thing,” Taylor and Tegan said together, “Come on, we’ll show you.”
I ended up following Tegan, Taylor and Mel all the way to the edge of a cliff. It was then when I started to freak out.
“WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE WE DOING AT THE EDGE OF A CLIFF?!”
"And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before."
