Topic: Is it wrong to be gay and celebrate Easter?

So so often you hear how it's wrong to be Christian or especially Catholic, and be gay, but what about the other way around?
I am mildly religious, but my family is quite Catholic. I've been raised that way, and even though I don't necessarily buy everything they've told me at church and Sunday school over the years, I do believe in Jesus and what he stands and stood for. So I practice Easter rituals, and a friend who I'm out to asked me if I wanted to go for a barbecue on Good Friday because we get the day off school, so I told him I'd go but I wouldn't eat meat.
I was accused of hypocrisy, because apparently gays can't be religious now. I feel like not only is he against lgbts and religion, but against me in general?
Have any of you been in this sort of a situation? Advice pleasee?

why can't we be religious? I have the right to be religious just as i have the right not to be.
celebrate something else on easter, ummm... it's my birthday on the 8th, celebrate that or something.
go tell him to shove his barbeque, you don't need him. jesus won't mind if you celebrate easter.
these people don't let you win because they don't like it when they're not on top. it's their insecurities, not your problem. he not out to get you, but he just needed an example to demonstrate his narrowminded opinions.
also, how did this arise from you not wanting to eat meat? this guy confuses me.
I don't think that was very helpful, but yeah...
it will be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end yet.

Whoever said that religion and homosexuality can't go hand-in-hand is an idiot.

It's taken me a while to get there, but I only think you're doing something wrong if you're hurting someone else.
We have loads of threads on being gay and religious so I won't go into that.
By loving someone of the same sex and practising the parts of Christianity that you believe, you're not hurting anyone, are you? For most Christians (excluding westboro and the like), the religion seems to be about loving and forgiveness right? It seems unlikely that doing that is going to hurt anyone, so be as gay as you like whilst celebrating Easter! Ignore that friend.

You can certainly be gay and religious. (In fact, I was in New Hampshire the other weekend and saw my very first church proudly waving a gay pride flag....it made me ecstatic!)
Do whatever you want, and tell them they're stupid for thinking all of a sudden you can't be Christian because you're gay. Sure the Bible says practicing homosexuality is a sin blah blah, it says a bunch of astuff we do are sins. Homosexuality is in that group of unimportant sins that nobody listens to, but which homophobes reference when hoping to convince us we are going to burn in hell. You're fine, but your friend sounds like he could use an explanation from you.

Sure, why not...for heaven's sake, don't let bigots decide what holidays you're allowed to celebrate now.
Though I was raised Catholic, I'm not religious any more, but you can choose to be as Christian as you want to be. Some churches are more accepting, if not affirming, of LGBTQ people than others. Obviously there are a few churches out there (in particular a certain sort of Baptist church) which promote nothing but un-Christian hate toward LGBTQ folks, but don't let them scare you away from finding a religious community you will actually feel comfortable with.

Okie dokie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feel like the two can't go together thanks for your help
Toby, Catholics don't eat meat on Good Friday, well Fridays in general but more importantly Good Friday, that's why it came up

Katie, I would just like to say: THAT IS SO SO COOL!!! I instantly adore that church and it's community!! My local church is not openly anti-gay, but it's not something I'd want to raise with them (maybe a few individuals, but not the community as a whole) but the one you saw sounds fantastic!

Its not wrong! I am bisexual, catholic, and I'm going to celebrate Easter.. (bisexual and catholic what a mix) but why would God make us this way if He didn't want us to be? He wants us to be in heaven with Him... So why would He make us this way if He didn't love us?

Hi
There is nothing wrong with being gay and religious.
Listen to this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENtL_li4GbE
Listen to what is said. Not one time do they say being gay is wrong. Also they do not say what religion to follow. All it talks about is the son of Christ/ God. It does not discriminate against anyone.
I think your friend is more shocked that someone of your age is willing to follow a religion; especially being in the LGBT community. Why not ask your friend.

This might help as it is in your home country :

I dont think it's wrong at all.
Im not at all religious.
Then, some people who are religious, think being gay is bad, wrong, a sin or whatever.

Oh my gosh Alex!! Thank you so much!! There are three right near me, although only one is catholic, but I go past there at least once a week! I didn't even realize!
Shelby-Chris, I totally agree, He made us and he wants us to be the est we can be, so surely if lgbt was a sin it wouldn't be so widespread. Plus, He asks that we be free people, ruled by morality and judgement, and so that sort of leaves doors open for us

I'm Christian and bisexual. I see no problem with religion and my sexuality!~ There's a documentary on Netflix called For The Bible Tells Me So that talks about religion and gay rights, and it's great! I recommend it to anyone who may be struggling with their faith and sexuality.
Jesus never said anything about gay people. All he said was, "Love God and each other".
TAKE THAT WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH.
