Not really, but that seems to be what many people equate me to after learning that I smoke.
I was minding my own business at a coffee shop near my home, just drinking my white peony tea and studying some chapters out of my textbook. And this girl starts talking to me about music and stuff. Over the course of the conversation I tell her I'm gay, and she was absolutely ecstatic (which I personally found a bit strange, but it was nicer than the last part of the conversation.) And then I pull out my pack of Camels and ask if its alright if I light one up. I try to be polite in situations like these. Had she simply said no, I would have put them away and continued in the, up to that point, pleasant conversation. And what does she do? She looks at me like I've just kicked dear old granny Gertrude in the newly replaced hip. She then proceeds to call me "fucking disgusting," and rounds it all off with "Suck on a fucking cigarette, you piece of shit."
Real fucking lady-like, bitch.
And what gets me is that she was so nice up to that point.
So, this has me wondering. What is the general consensus on smoking from the wonderful people on QA? Tell me how would all of you have dealt with this situation, either in my shoes or her's.
And I searched the forums, there were some topics that grazed upon this, but none that dealt primarily with this subject matter.

I'm never that rude to someone because they smoke. I'll tell people that I think they're making an incredibly stupid decision, but I've got plenty of friends who smoke cigarettes and I don't hassle them about it. It's your body, it's up to you if you want to ruin it for no reason and spend thousands of dollars in the process.

I'm never rude to people about smoking. I only ask that they don't smoke around me, because I'm a singer and I need my lungs.
I just don't understand WHY people smoke. I mean, it's one thing for older people, who started before they knew it was bad for you and now can't quit--but I just don't understand why on earth anyone, knowing what smoking does to your body, would decide to do it anyway. My grandpa died of throat cancer, and as a result I never got to meet him.
Can anyone enlighten me as to why younger people start smoking?

Im not a smoker, but the whole 'every bad thing in the world could be gotten rid of if we eradicate smoking' mentality of a lot of people irritates me. I understand why people don't like others smoking around them (i certainly don't), but i've never heard anyone go crazy over someone else smoking in a public area. its all about freedoms really, if someone wants to smoke and there in a place where it is legal to do so, just move away.
on an unrelated note, when im drunk i get a really strong urge to smoke (i dont act on it, but the urge is definitely there). I dont know if its the inner rebel in me trying to come out. Does anyone else find this?

>I just don't understand WHY people smoke.<
This is mind-boggling to me as well. What are the benefits? All I see are terrible costs. I mean, if it got you high I'd at least understand...

I don't like the smell of smoke' at all. It makes me cough and it smells gross to me. If someone else wants to smoke, that's their free will and I could care less.

I hate the smell of smoke, and it bothers me when people smoke around me. I must admit I also just can't understand why anyone would do it. If a close friend took it up I'd talk to them and tell them I was worried about them, because it seemed like a dangerous decision. But I wouldn't be rude to them or try to force them to quit, and I certainly wouldn't bring it up with a stranger. People have the right to do it; it's just a decision I'd never make myself.

I have friends who smoke, friends who don't smoke, and at least one friend who has recently quit. I stay several feet away from the ones who still smoke when they're outside with their cigarettes because I hate the smell, but the health risks are very well publicized and, well, it's their lungs. (Though I also know a woman who has emphysema and a bunch of other health problems, can't run or walk very far, and STILL smokes...)
I think insulting someone because they smoke (as you've described) is going rather too far.

lol. I wanted to slap her into oblivion. >=(
But I just lit up my cigarette and started reading my books again, this time with my iPod.
Not like I need her to validate my parking or anything.
She can go suck a tailpipe.

I wouldnt skitz, but cigarette smoke makes me feel sick. And I hate it when people feel the need to breathe it into your face.

As much as I hate smoking, I would probably just say, "I'd rather you didn't, but if you must then go ahead."
I cannot confirm nor deny allegations that the above post is indeed of my making, and makes any sense whatsoever.

I always ask my non-smoking friends if it's ok to tap up a cigarette, to be polite. People in school know I smoke, and the worst I've got it "those fags (british slang for cigarettes) stink, why the fuck o you wanna smoke? [enter rant abouthealth problems]"
