So, as I'm sure that most of you know, this week is the week of the 2010 Winter Olympics, taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The latest headline about the Olympic games is about the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luger. The luge track that the athletes are competing on is one of the fastest and most dangerous around, and the incident threw the IOC into a frenzy of safety-checking all around. While the fears of most have been assuaged, questions about the track and competition abound.
Plenty of other injuries have been sustained from the athletes' few training runs, though none have been as deadly as the Georgian luge fatality. Many members of dozens of teams wore a black band on their arms during the opening ceremonies to mourn Nodar's loss. This international affair brings together countries in both celebration, competition, and mourning.
While winter sports are definitely not my forte, I still love watching the competitions. What are you looking forward to seeing during these Olympic games? Which country are you rooting for? Favorite competitors?
Keep up with the Winter Olympics here [recaps and livestreaming of events]:

I watched the replay of the fatal accident on youtube, its so sad. He was too young to die. Well the only way things get fixed is when accidents happen. I pray for the athletes family.
As for the team I'm cheering for, since I'm Canadian I will no doubt cheer for Canada. I will also cheer for Italy because I am italian as well.
GO CANTALY (Canada+Italy) lol.

I love luge and skeleton, I have done about fifteen luge runs and seven skeleton runs, Im watching them and ski jumping.
my opinion is that they should correct the embankment on the curve he flew off of and start racing after that.

Johnny Weir. Homos represrent!
Here’s what I know about the realm of possibility—it is always expanding, it is never what you think it is. Everything around us was once deemed impossible. From the airplane overhead to the phones in our pockets to the choir girl putting her arm around the metalhead. As hard as it is for us to see sometimes, we all exist within the realm of possibility. Most of the limits are of our own world’s devising. And yet, every day we each do so many things that were once impossible to us.

I am looking forward to the Curling, the Bobsleigh, Speed Skating, Luge, and Skeleton, basically it all.
Favourite Athletes, Kevin Martin and Co. David Murdoch and Co. Cheryl Bernard and Co. As well as Jennifer Heil, And the flagbearer from Peru, and the dude from Ghana.
Countries I am cheering for: Canada, Ghana, and Gerogia. I have always been a fan of the Gerogian team, especially since their success in the 2008 Olympics, with 4 medals, 2 Gold and 2 Bronze in wrestling. These guys have faced such turmoil in the past 2 years with their competitors that their perseverance and strength emulate from their spirits.

I'm going for Australia, even though we suck at winter games cos we don't have snow!
Also for Germany, because I loved their uniforms in the opening ceremony.
And I guess for CANADA! Because I really like that country.

Speaking of homos representing, I have to say that k.d. lang's performance of Hallelujah during the opening ceremony was completely amazing. I watched it multiple times. I could watch it many more times. In fact, I think I'll watch it again.

I'm gonna be rooting mostly for the USA, and individually figure skaters Rachael Flatt (who I saw on TV a couple months ago at a competition and she was amazing, and she's only 17 years old!) and her teammate Alissa Czisny, who I just discovered is from my area.
I just read an article about snowboarder Hannah Teter's Sports Illustrated swimsuit photos... and of course after looking now I'm a fan. Oh man, how shallow. But I also just like snowboarding and will also be cheering for Flying Tomato. Snowboarding is also the one winter sport that America does really well at.
Events I hope to watch are figure skating, snowboarding, curling, or just anything that looks interesting I suppose, haha. I already saw some luge.

Haha, AQ, I was actually standing in Target today flipping through the winter olympian pictures in that Sports Illustrated issue. (Of course, my mother just had to interrupt me... luckily she didn't notice what I had swiftly returned to the shelf, and I escaped unscathed) Needless to say, I am now a definite fan of Teter and Vonn.
Of course I'll be rooting for the States, but there's also a soft spot in my heart for the Dutch team (especially in speedskating). I was watching recaps of the luge competitions, and I swear, it was terrifying to see just how fast they were going down that track. But it looked awesome.
And who doesn't like Shaun White?

I'm rooting for the U.S.A and FRANCE.
I will marry Apollo Ohno, just you all wait and see.
I never watch sports but I LOVE the winter Olympics. I guess the snow just makes it so romantic to me. Where I live it never ever snows. I do roller-skate so short track is the closest to what I've done. I just eat the Olympics up.

It's so shocking how Nodar died. You'd think that there would be more safety precautions like padding the metal rails, adding height to the walls, ect. I just can't believe how that could happen and especially how everything was caught on tape.
On a side note, I'm really rooting for the flying tomato (Love that nickname lol).

It's the fastest track in the world. Just to let you know they shortened the track by two full football fields and put in higher walls. Precautions are being taken.

I'm watching as much as I can now that I'm at my dad's house (divorced parents and mom doesn't have a tv). Right now I'm watching cross country skiing, and there is a Swedish skiier whose name is Charlotte Kalla... needless to say, I'm pulling for her

yo, someone died!?
I don't keep up with the news
These days, my life,
I feel it has no purpose.
And late at night these feelings swim to the surface.
Cause on the surface the city lights shine,
They're calling at me 'come and find your kind.'
