I don't want to sound like I'm complaining (although it will most likely inevitably come across that way), but the avatars allow for 500 KB maximum JPG images. It doesn't really matter how big the image is, when it's shrunken down to the super small size it is in the boards, it loses quality significantly and looks really blurry.
I was just wondering if there are any plans to allow PNG or GIF images or make the avatars a little bigger or get rid of that super blurry effect? Because I've been testing out some photos of mine as avatars and they all get so blurred and distorted when shrunken down like that it's like there's no point in even using them in the first place.

The larger the allowed upload limit, the lower the number of members who get confused when the system tells them their file size is too big.
There are no plans to support GIF. Even if we allow you to upload PNG images though, we'll still convert them to JPEG and compress them down. As you will know, file size savings are significant when reducing the quality of images.
However, here's the trick. If you have good image software locally, you should resize your own images down to the maximum dimensions listed at the bottom of the upload form -- avatars: 250x250.
If your image is equal to or below the maximum height and width, the program won't attempt to resize or compress the profile version. You may find that this improves the quality of the compressed thumbnail version too.
You're the only one I ever believed in, the answer that could never be found.

Alright, thanks. Making it 250 x 250 right off the bat does seem to improve the quality.

I never trusted those pesky GD libraries, so when I uploaded a new avatar to QA, I always cropped mine to a square and resized it to the maximum dimensions. Except for this last one, of course. But that does solve the problem.
If you wish to have yourself in your avatar, using a close-cropped image of your face is usually best, since it will be seen in a small form on most parts of the site.
