Hi all,

I have some points to note when using QA's features -- specifically regarding blogs, vlogs, and exhibitions.

Blogs
  • Please don't promote your entry if it merely contains a paragraph -- let's give that space in the sidebar to the full, thought-out entries
  • Similarly, don't promote your entry if it contains only non-original content, whether that be a video or a text. Your blog entries should be your work, your expression. If you're just dumping in content for others to comment on, you should post to the forums

Vlogs
  • A vlog is a video blog, not just any video. If you haven't made a video yourself, don't select 'vlog' because it misleads other users

Exhibitions
  • Again, this is quality-related. Please don't promote exhibitions that contain mainly images of yourself -- we'll just de-promote them. Let's keep the Mainpage Gallery bar full of good, creative content

Cheers guys.

Hey QA, a quick reminder on blogs!

Please put real thought into them and make them a substantial length. If they're not very long, i.e a few lines, please either lengthen them or staff will depromote them!

Also, if you want a specific response, please post your questions in Starbucks! Blogs are blogs, starbucks is the place for help and advice.

Thank you Emoticon: Grin :D

I assume this is a good place to post this, it seems right considering it just got posted in...

I don't get why that sidebar at the side is only reserved for "quality" entries. To me, it just seems like a "well, you're not good enough" kind of ethos to depromote entries just because there's some 'standard' they don't fulfil.

People write blogs for them to be seen, but using myself as an example, I don't have many people I talk to on here, so if I write a blog, it's unlikely anyone will actually see it unless it's on the sidebar. But sometimes, it's literally just a paragraph I want to say - like, something funny happened and it's something I want to share with people. That's not to say I haven't thought it out, just I physically cannot stretch out the story to more than a paragraph.

I get that QA wants to keep a level of quality control, and obviously if a blog is just a line then that's not really enough to get any kind of message across, but at the moment the sidebar just seems a little elitist in its selection. It does, after all, say "Last 10 Blog Entries", not "Last 10 Blog Entries That The Moderating Team Feel Are Of An Acceptable Standard". As the first post says, blogs are a personal expression, and it's just lost on me how you can measure the "substantial-ness" of that.

I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, I'm not at all meaning this like a "raargh I want this to change and I want it now" thing, I just thought I'd give some feedback since it's been brought up.

I understand where you're coming from. I've tried hard to make sure we're not elitist. We've only really closed the most ridiculous threads on the grounds of quality and purpose, like "count to 1,000,000" for example.

The problem with blogs is that people use them to grab attention, and it's a really good way of getting maximum exposure for the most pointless content. De-promoting content isn't the best solution because this isn't a magazine, it's a community, but nonetheless we really want to try to keep this place literate and intelligent.

The world of microblogging has a lot to answer for in terms of effort and attention span Emoticon: Smile :) I really despair when people write two or three paragraphs and apologise for writing something "long". Yet, we're moderators, not editors. We need to "guide" the style without being an overbearing presence. It's tricky.

It's not necessarily 'if your blog is a paragraph we will depromote them", it's more that if the paragraph is difficult to read, a post that should be in Starbucks etc rather than just a short blog entry they will get depromoted. It's hard to know what to keep and what to depromote sometimes! Emoticon: Sad :(
