Blog Entry: 10 Things Every College Freshman Should Know

Entry

10 Things Every College Freshman Should Know 1) Sound travels through walls. Especially lower frequencies. If someone comes and asks you to turn your music down, don't just click the knob down a touch. Adjust your bass as well. This especially goes for when someone knocks on your door at 2 in the morning.

2) Nobody cares about who likes who anymore. If you have a crush, tell your friends and share some giggles. But don't start gossiping about everybody else.

3) It's okay to enjoy homework. It will not make you totally uncool if you actually like and are able to discuss the reading. And believe it or not, the ability to do this will actually improve your grades.

4) There is no such thing as a "useless class." You are here for a reason. The only person capable of wasting your parents' money is you.

5) Parties should be reserved for weekends. If your bff's birthday is on a Tuesday, save the party for Friday night. And have it somewhere it's already loud. Then nobody will care.

6) Pulling the fire alarm is not funny. Especially at 3 a.m.

7) If you make a mess in a public area, clean it up. Wipe off the ramen that spattered the inside of the microwave. Clean the ring that your leaky coffee cup left on the lounge table. And for god's sake, flush the toilet.

8) Your teacher is not "psychotic" or "evil" or "shooting down" anyone's ideas. They are encouraging you to think critically. On that note, thinking critically does not mean calling everything you read "hypocritical."

9) There are standards teachers must uphold for the amount of homework they give you. Sometimes that standard is a lot. Do the best you can and don't just think you have a crappy teacher.

10) Last but not least, DON'T TAKE ON A MILLION THINGS AT ONCE.

This is really good advice, I'm already starting to experience some of that now. I'm feel like I'm ready to just go to college and do my own thing.

Sounds like I'm on the way to being a good student, I enjoy homework, I get along well with all my teachers, I go to bed on time and I keep things fairly neat Emoticon: Smile :).

That was pretty good! Agreed with the sentiments wholeheartedly Emoticon: Smile :)

The only other thing I'd add is: extra-curricular activities are just as, if not more, important than the academic side. Do as well as you can, of course, but don't forget to socialise, get involved, have fun. In other words... drink, join clubs and societies, enjoy your new found freedom and don't go home at weekends Emoticon: Smile :)

Grum, who are you kidding?

Phone your mother?

The whole $3 spent on that phone call can go towards a drink or pizza or one of those other bare necessities of the college student's basic diet.

Parents call children.

You don't give them any sign that you're alive for two weeks and they slowly start freaking out a bit and call you, and you're just like "Oh, sorry, i didn't have any credit..." even though you did, but you'd rather save it for sending (or replying to) drunken texts.

i live on campus, so, well, your 10 things doesn't quite work for me.

Day kids are weird. They always freak out about getting only 36/40 on an exam... and us college students are happy with a 20, and then we go and celebrate at the bar, wander home, try our luck getting dinner (because you're not allowed in the dining hall unless you're sober enough - it's quite the challenge to act it) and then think about studying but don't, and go to bed. Wake up because downstairs has their bass turned up so much that your windows rattle, go downstairs and join in the fun everyone seems to be having on this particular tuesday night.

Wow, featured blog again! I'm honored. Emoticon: Smile :)

I live on campus too, Megan, and that was my basis for writing this.

I do admit to going home on the weekends, though, lawlz.

Reading this sounds a lot like fun actually just that dorm life experience. I never was blessed to have it. I had horrible grades in High School to be accepted anywhere until years later by 20 years old. Ditching class and partying isn't always everything when your not even old enough to vote. By then I didn't care for a dorm as I was locally living by the university.

Just advice to you High School peeps, don't fuck up your chances for a great experience. I'm too old to even think about starting to live in a dorm when I stay in a house already. Ah I am envious. Good blog too read I felt as if I had that experience. Thanks!

From what i've gathered, talking to our exchange students, living on campus here is a lot different to the US. we're like big co-ed frat houses or something, and we don't do room-mates. We all have our own rooms, some of us have our own bathrooms, we have a security guard that comes and writes our names down to get us into trouble with the principal if we make too much noise after 11. (our seccie is the biggest effing powertripping douchebag c*nt i've ever met in my life. i'd call him that to his face if i didn't want to come back, and i don't even swear). The only trouble i ever have with people being too noisy while i'm trying to sleep/study is my supernerd boring RA (lol, she got a 6 in something and can't get a 7 gpa now) talking too loudly with the girl next door at the most random hours.

We have intercollege cultural and sports competitions that are pretty massive. All of them involve afterparties, of course. It's pretty gross, actually, but i guess that's part of college culture and australian youth culture. But the competitions are quite full on. Like college spirit is pretty massive - to the point that the guys from each college hate each other. One of the flat buildings in my college had to get their windows wire-meshed because the guys at the college next door kept breaking the windows with rocks.

This would be great advice if it was going to apply to me
