I Came Out! ... To My Grandparents. Well... On Sunday, I came out to my grandparents as gay & transgendered. Why did I come out? We're going to a wedding on Saturday. I came out so I could be myself at that wedding. (It's better than being outed AT a wedding. That happened to my friend Gary half a year ago. Not fun for him.)

My grampa held my hand as I explained it and gave me a big hug. I guess it isn't that much of a change for him, I've always done more "guyish" things with him anyway. I'm basically his tech support for when he accidentally downloads a computer virus or anything like that.

My grandma... Well, she quickly dismissed it as a phase and basically started ignoring us once the word "gay" was mentioned.
Me: I'm gay.
Grandma: WELL A LOT OF US WERE AT YOUR AGE. IT'S A PHASE. YOU'LL GROW OUT OF IT.

That kinda threw me off balance as this is the first time someone's actually said something like that to my face. The fact that she's family made it hurt just that little bit more, though.
Mum was on the phone to her yesterday and she's still sticking her head in the sand. "Well maybe it's best to keep it within the family..." NOT. EVEN. POSSIBLE.

Even if it was, why would I? It'd make me feel ashamed of what I am. I've already been that for years on end due to my father. Why should I have to for my grandma? Seriously.

We told Anna (The woman getting married.) as she has several lgbt friends. She completely understood. Yay! :3

some old people can be funny like that. it'll pass. it just takes a while to sink in.
my family were like that for a while. it passes.
congratulations for doing it.
it will be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end yet.

I'm so glad your grandpa understood! And your grandma, she might come around, just don't let her suppress who you really are. As Bill Cosby once said, "I don't know what the secret to success is, but the secret to failure is trying to make everyone else happy." So make sure you're happy Emoticon: Smile :)

I haven't told my grandparents yet. My grandma is super religious, and my grandpa has alzheimer's, so it'll be tricky. But I'll deal with whatever comes my way.

Have fun at the wedding! :3

I admire you for coming out to them. I can't come out to my grandparents, personally. To be honest, them knowing would get me disowned. So I admire you for doing that. Emoticon: Smile :) Congratulations! Emoticon: Grin :D I'm happy for you!

I think Granma will get with time. Don't worry. It's not the worst thing that could've been said.

Congrats on the outing though. Emoticon: Grin :D

I'm sure if I came out to my grandma, she'd try to beat me with the tortilla roller. My grandpa, may he rest in peace, would have kicked my ass.

When it comes to family, I don't really want anyone other than my mother and sister to know. They're cool with it on every level. But the rest of my family is close minded and a bit on the old fashioned side.

Either way, it doesn't matter whether they know or not because they don't run my life.

Moral of my story being: Don't take what you're grandma says to heart. She may be family, but she's not the one in charge of who you are and who you want to be.
