Blog Entry: Jobless and everything else-less

Entry

Jobless and everything else-less I just need to rant for a minute.
I've been looking for days (and this happened last year too) for jobs. I've been on every website, every store careers page, every fast food place, everywhere and either there are no jobs available, or when i do send in an application i don't get a reply.
It's because i have no previous experience, but i can't get experience until i get a job, and it's been a year and i'm just getting older (18) and i'm scared my lack of experience will make me even less likely to get a job because they'll wonder why i haven't had one.
I've also looked for work experience eg media. I was interested in BBC work experience and it sounds incredible, but it's in London and i can't afford to go there and back everyday for a month, so i haven't applied, and also i think that's part of me being lazy and not going out there to try and fulfil my goals.
My plan this holiday was to change. I wanted to get a job, to get experience involving media and get closer to my goals but i'm sitting here in bed ill, searching for jobs and finding none, and finding no work experience in my area at all. I send an email to the local newspapers last year and got no response, and i have tried again now and i don't think it will make much difference.
I am trying, but in the laziest way possible. I need a job, i can't be stuck in the house for two months, but my lack of experience cuts me off from all the jobs i apply for, and even that's rare as i've only found three jobs.
I need to change but i can't. I'm really scared for my future and the sad thing is i'm not trying to change it.

Volunteer? Or start calling places about the application you put in!

Okay, so if you can find a small buisness (A small diner or something akin to that) It may be easier to get a job there, The reason is that most don't advratise online and so they except people without much experience. Animal shelters and kennels also hire easily due to the fact that they usually have shortages of help.

If you keep bugging me I'll go all second grader on you! "I know you are but what am I?"

I don't know how much better it will make you feel to hear this, but I'm in the same sort of position. Only three places that took a CV/application actually had vacancies, and I haven't got in to any of them. I was offered an interview that turned out to be door knocking on commission which didn't seem safe/profitable, so I gave up on that before I found out if I was accepted or rejected.

When I couldn't get a job after GCSEs finished, I volunteered in a charity shop for the summer. It gave me something to do, and at the time I thought it would be useful experience for finding temporary work later on. Apparently not Emoticon: Sad :( my parents aren't chuffed that I'm not earning any money now that I've finished school, but they know it's not through lack of trying.

Gah!

Volunteer. Beg for an unpaid job fetching coffee. Once you make a good impression, try to work your way up from there (not necessarily in that same company, obviously).

Going to university and getting some classes (and references from professors) under your belt will help as well. There are many internships/etc. only available to university students (at least in the U.S.). Also, often many people find a job working AT their school in some department or another.

18 is so young - lots of people haven't had jobs by that age! Don't sweat it.
