Wanderer v. Hobo? I wonder, where is the line drawn between being a wanderer or a drifter, and being a nomadic hobo?

Perhaps I read too many fantasy webcomics. I'm fascinated by the idea of being a wanderer. Own whatever you can carry on your back, make money where you can, and go by foot~

Of course, maybe this is a horrible idea and it's a good thing I'm still in high school and can't actually try it out yet.

You're not the only one fascinated by the idea. I always imagine it'd be a kind of freedom, no ties, no obligations, nothing to stop you going wherever you wanted for however long you wanted to. You'd meet so many different people, be properly immersed in any number of local cultures...

Unless I get a job offer that is really too good to turn down, I plan on packing a rucksack and setting off indefinitely, just to wander around until I feel it's time to put down roots.

Heh, you could try it out in little bursts during the summer or something.

oh, hell yeah. I've always wanted to do that. Oh, and in answer to your question, a Hobo carries stuff in a sack on a stick, rides in boxcars, looks for hand-outs, and dreams of the Big Rock Candy Mountains (not the same as being a regular homeless person).

A wanderer could just be a guy with a backpack. Either way, that's the life I want, at least for a while. Maybe for a year or two in my 20's.
