So, about starting a GSA at my school... I warn you ahead of time, this is not going to be a particularly high quality blog because my brain is too happy to focus on one thing for more than three minutes at a time right now.

------

Today is a great day for all LGBT people in the small ass town that I unfortunately live in. Know why?

Well, it’s a great day because...THE GSA WAS APPROVED FOR NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!

I found out like 3 hours ago…so happy. Omg.

So, now I’m going to go on a crazy rampage to prepare for next year. Gonna buy a rainbow flag and wear it as a cape on the first day of my senior year. And, if I get beat up for it...DASA! Yes, DASA (google that shit) will be in effect and so the school has to do something about it if I get punched for showing my pride…oh what a great day that will be (not the part about getting punched though...)

How'd you manage to get yours approved? I'm considering starting one at my school but I don't exactly now how to go about it.
The caged bird stands on a grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
Of things unknown, but longed for still
And his tune is heard on a distant hill
For the caged bird
Sings of freedom.

We have Q&A, not GSA, but as I understand it it may be illegal to deny LGBT teens a support group. =D

I always wanted to visit the GSA at my school, but I'm irrationally terrified of people seeing me there Emoticon: Confused :s

Awesome! I'm in the GSA at my school and it makes such a difference having a nice, supportive place to go Emoticon: Smile :)

Stephanie: Well, one day, I decided that I was going to get off my ass and start a GSA. I found myself an advisor for the club, then I went to my principal's secretary and set up a meeting with my principal and the advisor I chose. I had the meeting, and my principal told me that 1. She was 100% behind me, and 2. To write a proposal letter to the board of education about it. I did just that, and I gave one copy of the letter to the superintendent's secretary, and one to my principal. The board will be seeing the letter on this upcoming monday, but my principal was talking to my mom the next day (she teaches at my school, so that's a normal occurrence) and she told my mom that I could start the club up in the fall, because it doesn't actually have to be approved by the board for its first year.

It's very likely that your school's process for starting clubs is different than mine. Especially since mine doesn't actually have one since it's so rare that kids start clubs. Check your school's handbook or ask your principal or someone that might know, and be sure to actually follow the steps right, or you'll probably get rejected.

Corrie: I don't believe it's actually illegal, BUT: Schools can't discriminate when a student wants to start a club. Say one student wants to start a science club and one wants to start a GSA. They can't accept the science club and not the GSA just because they don't want their school to have a GSA...they have to come up with a REALLY good reason why it was denied, or the kid could sue the school, and would more than likely win.

Also, what the hell is a Q&A? xD

Liam: If it makes you feel any better, I'm TERRIFIED of leading my GSA (even though I want to so badly and I'm going to) because I'm really afraid of what's going to happen once I'm out of the closet, positively and negatively. I'm weird xD

Kim: I'm glad to hear your GSA helps Emoticon: Smile :) Hopefully, mine'll be the same way...
