Blog Entry: This needs to stop.
Entry
This needs to stop.
I've been on QA since October, and when I first started out, it was awesome. People were nice, forums were nice, blogs were nice. But every day I see more and more blogs about suicide, about cutting. About depression. I go on Tumblr and just last night I posted on two blogs urging them not to kill themselves because they had said they were going to at that moment. Today my mom and I drove over a bridge and it had flowers and pictures on it because a girl had jumped off (during the time that I was hospitalized for my own suicidal ideation) and then only died when she was hit by a truck after landing. There is so much sadness, even in my own friend group, and it alarms me how horrible things are for so many people. And I sincerely, honestly think something needs to change. Either we need a better mental health system in this world, or we need to start finding better ways to help people who are having mental health issues.
One of the main issues with today's world is that people are so ignorant about mental health. Many people believe untruths about depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicide, psychosis... And the people who do understand and are able to help are few enough that many strugglers who need help don't get it because it isn't available.
Suicide has killed so many people who could have lived wonderful lives, who are missed by so many people, and whom would probably be glad they were alive today if their attempts weren't fatal.
So something has got to give. I wish I could just stand on every bridge in the world, hold every gun, take all the pills, every sharp object, every building, every possible chance for a suicide and hug those people wanting to use them and tell them I love them. Because I do, I love everyone, and I'm serious when I say that.
People need education more than anything in this country, and it is my mission to educate them. I'm going to talk to the counselors at my school, email the superintendent, send a letter to Obama, whatever it takes to start getting mental health education in schools. Because people need to know what to look for and how to help. People are dying every day because they don't get what they need. And I want to give it to them. I want to help.

Well said. I agree completely.
There definitely needs to be better education regarding mental health. Depression and suicide, among many other issues, are not to be taken lightly and it saddens me that so often they are seen as a "just part of being a teenager" or people saying "They're not serious about it."/"They'd never do it."
Ignorance is destructive.
Why should people only care and take these issues seriously after something tragic happens?
People should take them seriously in order to prevent a tragedy from happening.

This post, for me, hit home.
I too, was once suicidal.
I cut and even attempted twice and I told myself that if something good didn't happen in my life, I would attempt and succeed.
But then I met my amazing girlfriend, Shelby. She literally saved my life and I now dedicate my life to giving her all the love I can possibly give. It's the least I can do to repay her for what she has done. She made me realize that there are people who love me and that I have a reason to live.
I now share my story to help others and give them the love that everyone has given me.
Maybe I can save at least one life.
I loved this post and I love and respect what you're doing.
Keep on keeping on.(:

That was such a beautiful thing to read. All I hav to say is thank you for standing up and speaking up when you see that something is wrong. Far too many people just bury their head in the sand and do nothing because it's easier. Please don't ever give up. The world needs more people like you in all areas of life

Thanks for this I agree completely, people can be so ignorant and not realize it. Its not their fault. We just aren't teaching them what they need to know.

The problem is that our society hates science, and therefore psychology. More power to me, since I've been studying psychology.

Change starts with one person. It takes one person to start a thought movement. Once the thought movement has been started, there is no stopping it. The people you educate will tell other people, who will educate other people. Let those in your life know that you're there, and urge them to do the same for others in their lives. It isn't impossible to make a change, it just has to start somewhere.
